President Barack Obama visited the country’s most dangerous city on May 18 to talk about how new efforts around data and technology can improve policing. Camden, N.J., is one of 21 cities participating in a new program called the Police Data Initiative, the goals of which are to use open data to build community trust and foster innovation while building new technological tools that increase police accountability, decrease police brutality and identify problems that technology can help solve. The 21 participating cities promised to collectively release 101 sensitive datasets to the public centered around topics like use of force, vehicle and pedestrian stops, and officer-involved shootings.

Following the police-shooting death of Michael Brown and subsequent riots in Ferguson, MO, the Obama administration assembled a task force charged with somehow easing the adversarial relationship between law enforcement and the citizenry. The White House released those findings this morning and also announced that it is launching the Police Data Initiative, a 21-city pilot program designed to fast track solutions to the task force’s suggestions. The program centers around participating departments releasing 101 data sets that have previously been unobtainable by the general public. These include uses of force, police vehicle stops and officer involved shootings.

The new payphone wi-fi program Link NYC has the potential to be a “platform for citizen engagement,” members of the CityBridge consortium developing the project said Monday. Colin O’Donnell, founding partner of consortium member Control Group, even suggested the units set to replace all city pay phones could one day form the basis for digital voting polling stations. O’Donnell spoke alongside Dave Etherington, chief strategy officer of payphone franchisee Titan and Alphonso Jenkins, deputy commissioner at the Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications (DoITT) at an Internet Week panel in Chelsea.

As part of today’s announcement limiting military-style equipment sent to local police departments, President Obama also launched the Police Data Initiative, a move billed by the administration as a way to improve policing through IT and open data. According to the White House, 21 police departments — including Camden, New Jersey, where Obama made his speech — will be releasing “a combined total of 101 data sets that have not been released to the pubic.” Those include information on police stops, use of force, and officer-involved shootings — information that will be collated and shared with the public through new software for the departments.

May 19, 2015 — Niall Brennan is the chief data officer for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services(CMS). Brennan has an outstanding background in the private and public sectors, including work on Capitol Hill. In his work at CMS, he has been heavily involved in the two main information federal initiatives — big data and healthcare IT. For the past five years he has been face first in the battle to release information for public consumption. His agency is tasked with releasing open data sets to the public, yet much of the data is medical and has personal information attached. During the interview, Brennan talks about the strategy for open data release that has been successful at the CMS.

Burlington, VT – Mayor Miro Weinberger today announced the appointment of Beth Anderson as the City’s first-ever Chief Innovation Officer (CIO) to lead the newly-created Innovation & Technology Department. As CIO, Anderson will be responsible for managing the City’s information technology (IT) operations, as well as coordinating data-driven innovation and using performance metrics to facilitate the City’s continuous improvement efforts. The Mayor has asked the City Council to approve the appointment at its May 18, 2015 meeting. “The City of Burlington will be very fortunate to have a leader of Beth Anderson’s caliber serving as the City’s first Chief Innovation Officer,” said Mayor Weinberger.

Boston is using in-depth data about tweets and Twitter users who mention the city’s official account, @notifyboston, to track and analyze what Hub residents are talking about. “It’s important to find out how many people contact our city — whether it’s through Facebook or through Twitter or through phone calls or through email, however it is — it’s important to keep at that information,” Mayor Martin J. Walsh said. The city collects information including time, username and even precise location for some tweets, along with the text. “We use Twitter like a lot of places do, to push information to people but importantly to listen to them,” said Lauren Lockwood, chief digital officer for Walsh.

The U.S. Census Bureau is participating in this year`s National Day of Civic Hacking by launching the City SDK Open Data Solutions Challenge. ” This challenge encourages developers to use the Census Bureau`s new City Software Development Kit (SDK), a new tool that makes the bureau`s API (application programming interface) easier to use. As part of this national event, the Census Bureau will also participate in the 2015 Urban Sustainability Apps Competition, where developers have the opportunity to create apps using the City SDK. These events will bring together residents, software developers and entrepreneurs from across the nation to use publicly released data, code and technology to solve common sustainability challenges facing  neighborhoods, cities, states and the nation.
