Trying to get information out of the government can feel like standing in a Soviet bread line. Except that the bread has gone stale and inedibly hard by the time you reach the front of the queue. That’s often what happens when you file public records requests with federal, state and local agencies. The length of time government takes to hand it over, whether intentional or not, can make the data so old that it’s next to useless. To cannibalize the adage about justice: Access delayed is access denied. It’s especially true with the rise of the open data movement, the effort by civic-minded computer programmers to create wondrous apps from underutilized government databases.

We might be living longer than ever before, but the Australian government’s plan to keep older people in the workforce may not be that easy. The predictions are that by 2055 Australia will have a population of 39.7 million people with the number of people aged 65 and over expected to double, a testament to healthier lifestyles and medical science. Ageing populations are expensive, though. To offset the rising costs, governments are encouraging healthy older people to postpone retirement and keep working, at least until their 70s, and perhaps beyond. 2015年5月14日にiPhoneの脱獄コミュニティ（@comex）が、Safariを実行しているアップルの時計を示すビデオを投稿しました。アップル·ウォッチには、Safariをインストールされていませんが、動画では、Safariが動いちゃってます。

アップル·ウォッチで脱獄が成功したということは、iPhoneのiOS 8.3の脱獄も
近いのかもしれません。

Around the world, an unimaginably large amount of news is produced every single day. While this news is designed to be read by average readers to inform and entertain, to some political scientists it represents something perhaps even more tantalizing: data. The Global Database of Events, Language, and Tone (GDELT) is one attempt to put that data to use. GDELT monitors international media in more 65 languages. It uses automation to track events in real time, find the pertinent information from them and add them to a database of billions of events that now stretches back 30 years.

Open source news: May 9 – 15, 2015 In hardware news this week, CHIP is causing a lot of buzz. CHIP is a $9 USD computer, about the size of a credit card, with WiFi and Bluetooth capabilities as well as VGA and HDMI ports. On board, you’ll find a 1Ghz processor, 512MB RAM, and 4GB storage. CHIP runs on Linux (Debian), and you can code on Scratch, play games, and more on this tiny computer. The latest news tells us CHIP has already passed the million-dollar mark on Kickstarter. May 15, 2015 | Ken Kubota, Director of Data Science for the Michael J. Fox Foundation, is a big fan of the Framingham Heart Study. Since the 1940s, this project has tracked the incidence of cardiovascular disease among three generations of residents of Framingham, Mass., collecting an incredible amount of data about the lifestyle factors that put people at higher risk for heart failure. “We know everything about heart disease from that study,” says Kubota. Many of its headline findings, like the fact that a healthy diet and regular exercise can protect against heart disease, now seem so obvious it’s almost hard to believe they were ever unknown.

Ofcom said its plans would boost “competition and innovation” in the £2bn leased line data market for businesses from 2017. Leased lines are dedicated high-speed data links used by large firms, mobile and broadband operators and schools, universities and libraries. Currently, BT sells wholesale leased lines to other providers, which it provides through its Openreach division. The changes would let rival firms to use their own equipment on the network. BT said the changes could favour large firms and hurt investment. It said: “Openreach’s current offer creates a level playing field and a vibrant, competitive market with hundreds of competing companies, large and small. Mandating dark fibre risks favouring a few companies that have the greatest capability to deploy it.

It used to be that to be a scientist, you had to hold a degree and be part of an existing power structure, such as a research university or an institution that receives government funding. That traditional power structure, however, can be stifling for innovation that falls outside traditional science. Increasingly technology is allowing anyone, regardless of income or background, to be a scientist. On Thursday, Ashoka, a nonprofit that aims to support social entrepreneurs, convened a panel at its Future Forum conference in D.C., of people working not only to bring science to diverse communities, but to encourage scientists to take their research “from the ivory tower to the street.

15 May 2015 – The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC®) announces a Water Data Summit to be held at the UCAR/NCAR Center Green in Boulder, Colorado on June 3, 2015. This event is part of theJune 2015 OGC Technical Committee Meeting. The goal of the Water Data Summit is to stimulate engagement in development of tools and policies for the U.S. Open Water Data Initiative (OWDI). The Open Water Data Initiative will integrate different sources of water information into a connected, national water data framework and leverage existing systems, infrastructure and tools to underpin innovation, modeling, data sharing, and solution development. Similar initiatives are being pursued in Europe, Australia, New Zealand and other regions.
