The 2012 estimate is not provided due to a significant change in methodology by Statistics Canada. Data for the TSRC are no longer comparable with previous years. The 2011 result is an estimate using the previous methodology. Figures using the new methodology will be presented when comparable data are available to analyze changes in tourism expenditures in Alberta over time. The estimate for 2011 is based on travel statistics that provide an indication of demand. Deplanement statistics provided by airports measure the number of passengers arriving on all flights at the airports. Also, deplanements include both domestic and international passengers where customs counts at the airport only measure the number of passengers clearing Canada Customs.

We might be living longer than ever before, but the Australian government’s plan to keep older people in the workforce may not be that easy. The predictions are that by 2055 the nation will have a population of 39.7 million people with the number of people aged 65 and over expected to double, a testament to healthier lifestyles and medical science. Ageing populations are expensive, though. To offset the rising costs, governments are encouraging healthy older people to postpone retirement and keep working, at least until their 70s, and perhaps beyond. But jobs are not easy to come by these days. Youth unemployment in Australia is 4.5 times higher than the general rate, so keeping older workers in their jobs will not be helping to reduce youth unemployment.

The Philippine Long Distance and Telephone Co (PLDT) is planning to invest around $100 million in its Big Data business, meant to help companies and government agencies develop more effective products, services, and programs for their target markets, a top company executive said. “The overall budget is roughly $100 million,” said PLDT chief strategy officer Winston Damarillo, noting that the telco giant has previously invested $30 million in developing its Big Data platform, during the last three years. “The $100M investment is embedded in consumer and enterprise, plus direct enablement for businesses,” Damarillo added.

Raising the digital barn, or how we’re building the Housing Data Hub A couple weeks ago, we announced the Housing Data Hub! In this post, read about our technical and process approach to building the hub and what’s next. The Housing Data Hub was born out of the notion that in order to mature our open data practice at the City, we needed to diversify our approach to publishing data. In the City’s open data strategy, a quick look at datasets over time reveals a publishing stagnation. While the inventory process will help us bring institutional focus and planning to citywide data, Joy hit on the idea early on that we also needed to release datasets strategically around common themes or topics. Housing affordability is our first one.

The [MC]2 Conference is an annual event dedicated to MTConnect, the open-source interoperability standard for manufacturing equipment. The most recent edition of this conference (April 28-30) was a bit different than its three previous occurrences. The theme of this year’s conference was transforming a business with data-driven manufacturing and the industrial Internet of Things. Past conferences focused primarily on the development and implementation of the MTConnect standard, with many of the presentations centered on MTConnect-enabled applications for machine shops, such as machine monitoring. In contrast, this year’s conference covered the broader context in which this standard plays a vital role.
