エミリーは、2015 年 6 月学習プログラムをサポートするために、ODI を参加しました。彼女は ODI の新しいオンライン学習モジュールをフランス語に翻訳に携わっています。 エミリーは、言語とストラスブール、欧州議会を同時に使用、大学での勉強に海外 1 年を含まれている現代のヨーロッパ研究の学位を持つ 2014 年に卒業しました。かゆみ足、ODI で働くためにロンドンに戻る前に統計の会社で研究インターンとして仕事を卒業後 6 ヶ月間ドイツに移り住むこととなった。

Emily joined the ODI in June 2015 to support the Learning programme. She is currently involved in translating the ODI’s new online learning modules into French. Emily graduated in 2014 with a degree in languages and contemporary European studies, which included a year abroad in Strasbourg, simultaneously working in the European Parliament and studying at the university. Itchy feet led her to moving to Germany for six months after graduating to work as a research intern in a statistics company, before returning to London to work at the ODI.

Sunlight’s criminal justice project is in the process of creating a catalog of criminal justice data nationwide. So far, we have collected metadata on what datasets, publications and reports are available from all corners of the criminal justice system in over 38 states and the District of Columbia! Through this work, we have discovered gaps in what data the criminal justice system makes available and have celebrated triumphs of data release. In this blog post, we would like to give you an update on some of the great data resources we have come across throughout our research.

Six teams submitted innovative and engaging entries at the inaugural GovHack Sunshine Coast event held from 3-5 July. Twenty people attended the launch on Friday night, including sponsors, to kick off the 46-hour event which brought together geeks, digital creatives, data analysts, storytellers and entrepreneurs to explore open government data. Regional Development Australia (RDA) Sunshine Coast Interim CEO Anne Lawrence said the high calibre of participants and collaborative nature of the teams was outstanding. “We were overwhelmed with the quality of thinking and responses to the open data challenge.

The New Mexico Foundation for Open Government has named four, including Albuquerque Journal Editor Kent Walz, to receive the group’s top honor for open government, the Dixon First Amendment Award. The award honors the memory of FOG co-founder and longtime board member William S. Dixon, an Albuquerque attorney and leading defender of the First Amendment and the sunshine laws in New Mexico. The four recipients and their categories are: “Transparency is more than a slogan, but an ongoing commitment to open the doors to government,” FOG president Gregory Williams said in a statement. “When you’re in it for the long haul, you’d better have a sharp intellect and a great sense of humor. Bill Dixon had both,” he said.

DigitalOcean CEO Ben Uretsky explains how he’s building one of the world’s fastest-growing cloud providers and his plans for open-sourcing his company’s platform. Cloud vendor DigitalOcean today announced that it has raised $83 million in a Series B round of funding led by Access Industries and with the participation of Andreessen Horowitz. The new funding, according to Ben Uretsky, co-founder and CEO of DigitalOcean, will help finance his company’s growth, buying new servers and investing in the facilities and assets that are needed to move the company forward. “We’re trying to look two to three years ahead to understand what the capital needs of the business are,” Uretsky told eWEEK.

The Obama administration announced Wednesday a new rule aimed at promoting fair housing, nearly 50 years after the Fair Housing Act of 1968 was passed to combat segregation and wide-spread discrimination in neighborhoods across the country. Despite the decades old law requiring communities that receive federal funds to increase access to quality, affordable housing, many communities in the U.S. — in cities like Chicago and Baltimore — remain segregated by race and income. Often these majority-minority communities lack access to good schools, grocery stores and to the kinds of opportunities necessary to help residents rise out of poverty.

Chancellor George Osborne’s red Budget box might now resemble the world’s most expensively-pimped iPad case, but does it hold much of interest for the UK’s technology sector, or for its digitally enabled businesses – beyond the £13bn of central government IT cuts already announced, which will be a blow to providers? First, the big picture. Osborne delivered the first full-Tory Budget since 1996 – one described even by the FT as “radical” – with its predicted focus on creating what he called a “high wage, low tax, lower welfare” economy. But the promised focus on technology, the Internet of Things, and more, was replaced by fulsome praise for Iain Duncan Smith’s Universal Credit IT system, which has been described as “unworkable” by government spending watchdogs.

From astronomy to genomics, scientists are increasingly storing and studying their data sets on shared remote ‘cloud’ computing servers, accessed through the Internet. Three of Europe’s biggest research labs now want to help academics by working with commercial firms to create a continent-wide cloud-computing portal — and they are hoping to get backing from the European Commission. Many researchers find cloud computing to be more flexible and efficient than buying expensive hardware — they can rent servers from firms such as Amazon and Google when they need a burst of power for an intensive computation, for example (see Nature 522, 115–116; 2015).

The Authorities Budget Office and Open Data NY have made new sources of information on New York State Public Authorities available at the ABO website www.abo.ny.gov. “This unprecedented release of public authority information consists of over 20 sets of data that include a wide collection of information reported by public authorities to the ABO such as financial data, salaries, procurement reports, debt schedules, real property transactions and various economic development projects,” the office’s press release said. “It is ABO’s belief that making this information widely available to the public contributes to our mission of making public authorities more transparent and accountable.
