Researchers from Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI), VU University (VU), Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR) , Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) and the Institute for Sound and Vison have been awarded the Lodlam Open Data Prize for the Polimedia research project. The prize is an award for Linked Open Data in the field of Library Archives and Museums and was handed out at the LODLAM Summit in Sydney, Australia. Polimedia aims to stimulate and facilitate large scale cross media analysis of political events and is beneficial for researchers in communication science, politics, history and journalism. The main result of the research project is Polimedia.nl, a public web portal that links political debates to news articles that cover them over a timespan of fifty years, until 1995.

During his recent efforts to help plan programming for the fall 2015 ACP/CMA National College Media Convention — the world’s largest annual gathering of student journalists and their advisers and profs — David Simpson wanted to hear more from the students themselves. Specifically, he was curious: In these changing times, what do potential student attendees want to get most from a journalism conference experience?  So Simpson, a revered veteran journalist and director of student media at Georgia Southern University, reached out to me with his student-first query. I in turn reached out to the summer 2015 CMM Editorial Fellows — an elite crew of current and recent student journalists.

The New York City Transit authority has tapped OpenText analytics to analyze transit data and help the authority improve performance. Consisting of 24 subway lines, 224 bus routes and 45,000 employees, New York City Transit Authority (NYCT) is the largest transportation network in North America and serves more than seven million people weekly. According to NYCT, the subway system generates tens of thousands of data records per minute through everything from train sensors to turnstiles. OpenText will be tasked with providing a data management and analytics platform to identify potential service issues and help NYCT plan ahead. “Our goal was to provide a self-service shop, to let people get customized reports when they need them.

Silicon Valley venture capitalist Tim Draper, through his “Innovate Your State” non-profit, is donating up to $500,000 to give every California county a year-long subscription to OpenGov, a cloud-based financial analysis and transparency platform for governments. “We are going to give everybody a great window on how those counties operate their finances,” Draper told the Sacramento Bee. “I challenge any county not to do this. It’s free. If they’re not doing it, what are they hiding?” OpenGov is a software-as-a-service financial analysis platform that visualizes data generated by internal accounting systems, giving state and local governments a way to better analyze their spending and increasing financial transparency for citizens.

The Greater London Authority has won one of five Open Data Awards handed out by Sir Tim Berners-Lee’s Open Data Institute. The awards, hosted by Bloomberg, recognise innovation and excellence in open data. The Greater London Authority topped the Publisher category for opening up more than 600 datasets in 2010 for use to build new tools, something that has become a model for other cities. The Business Award went to Open Corporates, who are using open data to provide analysis and understanding of how corporations operate. Mo McRoberts won the Individual Champion Award for encouraging the BBC and others to appreciate the potential that open data can have,  and getting them to open it up.

Data has a shelf life, and it is impractical to secure everything. That was the paradigm pushed by Defense Department CIO Terry Halvorsen at a July 9 industry event in Washington, D.C. Like food, the Pentagon’s IT boss said, data should come with an expiration date, because after a couple months, data is generally less valuable and therefore less worth securing. “I think it’s becoming a whole lot less about the devices and a whole lot more about…intelligently understanding the data,” Halvorsen told a mobility conference hosted by AFCEA’s D.C. chapter. “And I really do think you all can help us with that.” A self-described history buff, Halvorsen appealed to the data specialists in the audience to collaborate more closely with DOD, as he said industry did during World War II.
