For many women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields, being the only person of their gender in a room full of colleagues is not a rare experience. But for Dan Hammer, a Presidential Innovation Fellow at NASA, the tables were turned when a visit to a meeting “to discuss the value of the Agency’s data holdings” provided his first-ever chance to see what it feels like to be “the only man in the room of powerful technologists,” he reports at open.NASA. “[T]he self-awareness associated with being the only man in the room changed the way I interacted with my colleagues in the room,” Hammer notes. “I never think about this. I never have to think about it. I just sort of say what I want, when I want.

EDMONTON – Edmonton storm watchers can now check online to see how much rain has fallen in different parts of the city and how much impact it’s having. The city has put information from its 30 rain gauges in the region into the open data catalogue. “People are concerned about weather when it happens, and what it can do in their neighbourhood,” senior drainage engineer Scott Vatcher said Monday. “This is really meant to show that the rainfall in Edmonton can be pretty variable depending on where you are.” For example, while about 25 millimetres fell in Sherwood Park over the previous day, only 2.3 millimetres was recorded a short distance north in Clover Bar. But there was 10.2 millimetres of precipitation registered by Environment Canada station at the Edmonton International Airport.

Pittsburgh City Council on Tuesday will take a final vote on a bill that would take the city one step closer to the creation of a Regional Data Center. The legislation authorizes the city to enter into cooperation agreements with Allegheny County and the University of Pittsburgh to create and operate a web-based open data portal. Council passed a bill establishing a comprehensive open data ordinance last March, which goes above and beyond the state’s Right to Know Law. Councilwoman Natalia Rudiak, who sponsored the initial legislation, said residents will no longer have to ask for information, but rather will be freely given it.

Korea is well positioned for economic growth with leading initiatives in Open Government Data (OGD), according to a senior official at the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). “Korea’s ranking in the Open, Useful, Reusable Government Data Index (OUR Data Index) seems to reflect its emphasis on the full set of dimensions and enabling conditions that are prerequisites for public value creation,” Edwin Lau, head of division for reform of the public sector, directorate for public governance and territorial development at the OECD, said in a recent interview with The Korea Times.

The secu rity considerations we would like to discuss in this blog post cover these two aspects: Basis for security evaluation is finding that the data publication and subsequent interaction with the users who work with these data almost always lies in different security context than production data processing in the organization. Therefore best practice is to put infrastructure necessary for data publication place in a separate computing environment. This measure is typically implemented at the network layer. Data publication infrastructure is mostly placed into the network segment/environment for organization’s servers directed toward Internet (as these did well provide public access to data).

I had the pleasure of interviewing Rosaria Silipo about her upcoming talk at OSCON: Advanced analytics for the Internet of Things. I recently taught a group of librarians about Internet of Things and how we can use it to provide better services to our patrons, so when I saw Rosaria’s talk summary I thought it was right up my alley. One of the biggest concerns folks in my workshop had was security, and I love Rosaria’s response to my security question: I have been a data analyst—now the term seems to be data scientist—for more than 20 years. I have been mining data for academic projects, corporate solutions, and nonprofit institutions.

Open Data’s rockstars gathered at Bloomberg’s London offices last night, for the second Open Data Awards. Organized by the Open Data Institute (ODI), the Awards celebrate “a generation of network thinkers who are changing the world with open data.” More importantly, they demonstrate some of the ways in which services and applications powered by Open Data are transforming lives and creating business opportunities around the world. ODI co-founders, Web inventor Sir Tim Berners-Lee and University of Southampton Professor Sir Nigel Shadbolt, presented the Awards and shared their perspectives on the work that is still to be done. Awards covered five categories, comprising a Business award, an Innovation award, a Social Impact award, an Individual Champion award, and a Data Publisher award.

Second annual Open Data Awards recognises the people and organisations that have driven the most impact through open data Sir Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the World Wide Web, last night awarded the people and organisations ‘changing the world’ with open data. The computer scientist founded the Open Data Institute (ODI) in 2012 with Sir Nigel Shadbolt to champion the free exchange of information around the world. Last night saw the ODI celebrate its second annual Open Data Awards, as 300 delegates convened at Bloomberg London to learn who had made the most impact through open data.
