Out of 28,000 requests filed between June 2013 and July 2014, only 21 per cent were returned free of redactions, according to data obtained from the government’s open information portal. Fifty-seven per cent were censored in some way. CSIS was by far the most secretive agency. During the one-year period, the intelligence service did not fully release a single government file, the data shows. The Privy Council Office followed closely behind, with staffers fully fulfilling only 3 per cent of the requests. Only 26 per cent of requests sent to Environment Canada were left uncensored. SAN FRANCISCO, July 7, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The Hack Reactor group of in-person and online programming schools focused on student career outcomes – which graduates over 1,000 Software Engineers annually – announced the launch of their partnership with Operation Spark, a non-profit that teaches coding skills to at-risk youth. Together, they will pilot a new hybrid education model to increase technical talent in New Orleans. The program starts with a 4-week, part-time “Intro to Coding” prep course, followed by Hack Reactor’s 12-week immersive Remote Beta program, both experienced in Operation Spark’s New Orleans location. Applications for the prep course are being accepted now, with classes starting July 13.

It outlines a set of principles for accessing and using open data which are: Accessible and Useable by All; Pivot Tables are useful data summarization tools that most Excel users will be familiar with. Chris Moffitt wrote a great post on “Pandas Pivot Table Explained” which in addition to being a good tutorial, offers a handy cheat sheet for folks wanting to make pivot tables in Python with Pandas.   It’s often fun to read the “data lab” blogs of companies that collect or produce devices that collect a lot of data.

All too many people do not fully understand how their government actually works. This is in part due to the lack of resources dedicated to teaching about this subject. Additionally, despite the existence of a successful nationwide movement to promote transparency in government, very few average people have any desire to access this information or understand its implications on their daily lives. At Skyless Game Studios, we decided to do something about this issue. We are developing a video game specifically designed to teach people about municipal government using real open budget data as a part of the game.

The policy represents the county’s first formal attempt at making the functions of county government more transparent and accessible to members of the public. Led mainly by the county’s legal and information technology departments, the changes will mainly be reflected in the form of improvements to the county’s new website, such as an enhanced search engine and a separate “public access page.” Under the plan — which will roll out over the next few months — the county will also designate an existing employee to be “public access assistant,” whose job it will be to assist the public in acquiring information or documents. In the short term, current public information officer Maia Carroll said she would be filling that role.
