AUSTIN, Texas–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Continuum Analytics, which develops Anaconda, the leading modern open source analytics platform powered by Python, has secured a $24 million Series A funding round led by General Catalyst Partners and BuildGroup. The funds will be leveraged to accelerate product development, expand sales and marketing, and continue to invest in strengthening the Python and Anaconda communities. The latest round of $24 million in funding comes after $10 million in initial funding from a combination of angel investors and a DARPA award, bringing total funding to-date to $34 million. Media release from the Office of Governor Terry McAuliffe: RICHMOND – Governor Terry McAuliffe today announced that Virginia state government and the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Business will again work together on data re-engineering internships to explore the use of data to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of state government. In the 2014-2015 school year, the data internship program’s first, 45 graduate students and more than 20 state agencies participated. Those internships have resulted in tangible dollar savings and improved agency processes. Student/agency teams have worked on successful projects, such as improving how the state prices and sells its goods and services, and more efficiently matching citizens to benefits when they enroll.

Three more cities now have real-time public transportation information available to their commuters, without having to develop or maintain the mobile apps themselves. All it took was improved open data, and some serious collaboration with some civic-minded coders. All three cities — Chattanooga, Tenn., Baltimore, and Cleveland — are now served by Transit App, which uses open public transportation data to display all local transport options and departure times instantly in 99 cities worldwide. Users can view bus schedules and arrivals, metro rail maps and departures, request service from Uber, plan a bicycle trip with viewable bike paths and more.

Continuum Analytics has closed on $24 million in Series A funding led by General Catalyst Partners and BuildGroup. The Austin-based startup plans to use the funds on product development, sales and marketing and community development. Continuum makes Anaconda, the leading modern open source analytics platform built on Python, an open data science language. The company has previously received $10 million in funding from angel investors and a Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA) award. To date, the company has raised $34 million. Continuum Analytics’ Anaconda platform has more than two million users including 200 of the Fortune 500 companies and 8,000 universities. Its customers include Boeing, Procter & Gamble, Pepsi, Schlumberger, the U.S.

Governance data initiatives are proliferating. And we’re making progress: As a community, we’ve moved from a focus on generating data to caring more about how that data is used. But are these efforts having the impact that we want? Are they influencing how governments make decisions? Those of us who work with governance data (that is, data on public services or, say, legislative or fiscal issues) recognize its potential to increase government accountability. Yet as a community, we don’t know enough about what impact we’ve had. The one thing we do know is that the impact so far is more limited than we’d like—given our own expectations and the investments that donors have made.

(TNS) — Two University at Albany researchers are working on a desktop and smartphone app called Electorate, which aims at increasing voter turnout in New York. Alex Muro of Albany and Eric Krans of Altamont, researchers at the Albany Visualization and Informatics Lab at UAlbany, wanted to see increased voter turnout, which is on a downward trend in the state, so they used open data to create an application that puts campaign information at voters’ fingertips. “Electorate literally puts information on elected officials into the palm of your hands,” Krans said. “The biggest impact comes when we marry easily accessible voting information with the power of existing social networks.

When I last spoke with one of the leaders from Hipcamp they had just completed their initial round of seed funding and had plans to expand their scope of providing quality camping experiences across the USA. They had just launched, creating a platform to provide access to a limited number of campsites for reservations in California. The seed funding was a great success. In September 2014 Hipcamp raised $2.1 million in capital from O’Reilly Alpha Tech Ventures and AngelList, well positioning the company to tackle their strategic expansion. A recent follow-up conversation with CEO Alyssa Ravasio revealed a wholly different set of circumstances. Hipcamp, at the time we spoke, provided reservations for 198,003 camp sites through 5,399 campgrounds and 1,476 parks across 29 US states.
