Apache Spark should be considered the default engine for Hadoop workloads going forward, taking the job that MapReduce held for many years, Cloudera announced today. The Hadoop distributor also announced its “One Platform Initiative” to highlight the investments it’s making in Spark to boost its enterprise capabilities. The rapid rise of the Spark juggernaut has been a mixed blessing for Cloudera and other Hadoop distributors. On the one hand, the open source technology–which can run up to 100 times faster than MapReduce and lets programmers work in languages like Scala–has been a boon to productivity for its users.

When The Water Project began in 2006, we were inspired to act based on the promises of access to clean, safe water in rural Africa. Renewed health, a better chance at a good education, improved economies, and unlocked human potential still remain compelling reasons to work toward SDG 6 — Clean water and sanitation — ensuring availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all. What we now know, however, is the promise of water is wholly dependent on its reliability, not just its provision. It is encouraging to us that some momentum within the Water Sector toward this end is finally beginning to shift in the right direction. When a young girl wakes in the morning and begins to think through her day, the assurance of access to water frees her to hope for progress.

New child mortality estimates [PDF 4.2 Mb] released today by the United Nations Inter-agency Group for Child Mortality Estimation (UN IGME) show major progress globally.  But this drop is still not enough to meet the global MDG4 target of a two-thirds reduction between 1990 and 2015. : East Asia and the Pacific, and Latin America and the Caribbean, whereas the Europe and Central Asia, and Middle East and North Africa regions fell slightly short. In Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, progress remains insufficient to reach the target. At the country level, about a third of low and middle-income countries (46) have reduced their under-five mortality by two thirds or more and achieved the MDG 4 target.

Japanese researchers have conducted research to prove that Wikipedia’s publicly-available page view data could potentially provide a better insight into web trends than the more limited statistics available from Google. The paper [PDF], a collaboration between researchers at three Japanese universities, notes the success of University of Prague economist Ladislav Krištoufek in demonstrating a correlation between peak interest graphs from Google Trends and Wikipedia in searching for the term ‘Bitcoin’. The paper finds that this parity is reproducible to an average accuracy of 0.72, and presents an initial example of Japanese interest in the term ‘Anne Hathaway’ when a TV movie featuring the actress was broadcast in Japan in December of 2014.

It was in the spring of 2011, at a hackathon organized by Technical.ly Philly, that he helped build his first civic app: the Office of Property Assessment (OPA) Data Liberator. It let users search city property records by owner name, something you couldn’t do on Phila.gov, the city’s then much maligned website. The big selling point? You could find slumlords with it, by seeing if a crummy landlord had properties elsewhere in the city. These were the very early data days of the city’s open data movement, right after Mayor Michael Nutter signed an open data executive order. Case in point: the data behind the OPA Data Liberator — property records — wasn’t readily available.

Attending the US Open has been on our family’s bucket list for over ten years. My husband went to the US Open every year, when he was growing up in New York. He’s always wanted to take us to “experience” one of the Grand Slam events. We, finally, buckled down and purchased the tickets in May! The USTA Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows is a beautiful 42-acre venue with 20 outdoor and12 indoor courts. We bought tickets for the first and second days. It was a zoo in the morning on opening day and took 30 minutes to get through the security gate. As a first-timer, I was amazed at how well-attended this event was. Parents and grandparents take their kids and spent a whole day at the venue. People of all ages come as a group or as a couple.

One online dictionary defines transparency as “free from pretense or deceit,” “easily detected or seen through” and “readily understood.” However, too many government agencies at the local and state levels are only ostensibly transparent. For example, the state-run Transparency Mississippi website claims to contain “a wealth of data available on the site that is searchable, viewable on screen and can also be printed for offline usage.” It was a handy tool, although not very user-friendly. Sometime in the past year, however, the state switched to a new, even less friendly system.

The Open Data Institute (ODI) has launched an investigation into public sector spending on consultancy services and hopes to show that by making the data public, the government can cut costs. It believes releasing open data on the price differences between large firms and small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) could help shift spend, while at the same time maintaining “the level of services currently provided”. Most public sector organisations use a range of consultancy services, but the amount of money spent varies and moving to smaller suppliers could save money, argues the ODI.
