California Attorney General Kamala Harris last week announced the launch of OpenJustice, a criminal justice open data site that the state described as a “first-of-its-kind” initiative. According to the California Department of Justice and the Office of the Attorney General, OpenJustice consists of two key elements:  A dashboard of criminal justice indicators and an open data portal that encourages download and re-use of CDOJ data. The dashboard uses three datasets: law enforcement officers killed or assaulted in the line of duty; deaths in custody, including arrest-related deaths; and arrests and bookings. Each set has interactive web tools to allow the public to visualize and explore different indicators over specific timelines and across jurisdictions.

It is often said that the Internet of Things is all about data. Indeed, at its absolute heart, the whole ecosystem could even be reduced to four distinct layers, ones that are essentially applicable to any vertical. First of all, you have the sensing layer: somehow (using sensors, Wi-Fi, beacons: whatever you can!) you have to collect the data in the first place, often in harsh environments. From there you need to transport the data on a connectivity layer. This could be mobile or fixed, Wi-Fi or something altogether more cutting edge. Thirdly, you need to aggregate this data, to bring it together and allow it to be exchanged. Finally, there’s the crucial matter of analytics, where the raw data is transformed into something useful.

Assembly Speaker Robin Vos (R-Rochester) said Tuesday that even though a member of his staff drafted a bill that would exempt lawmakers from key provisions in the state’s open records law, he never planned on actually introducing it in the legislature. Asked about the draft, Vos told reporters Tuesday that the request was simply meant as starting point for a study committee which may still be formed to look at the open records law. Presently, it will take a regulation change which requires approval of the governor for the Legislature to vary the way it handles open data. Speaker Vos said shortly after the budget process, such a study committee could be set up to review open records law changes if needed.

Newly launched data present that Meeting Speaker Robin Vos is exploring the thought of treating the Legislature in a different way than different authorities our bodies in Wisconsin in relation to dealing with open data. Vos said Tuesday that the bill drafting request submitted in July was done so there could be a starting point for discussions by a yet-to-be-formed study committee. The bill was to include his original ideas for changing the law, which morphed over time, he said. The proposal would allow the legislature to set its own open records protocol and to make changes without holding a public hearing or consultation with the governor. That’s what emails obtained through an open records request by the Center for Media and Democracy now show.

Transport systems will be made safer, easier and more efficient through the release of transport data from VicRoads via a new open data platform. Developed by the Victorian road service, VicRoads, using smart mapping technology from Esri’s ArcGIS Platform, the VicRoads Open Data Site features more than 50 high-quality and publicly available previously unreleased datasets. VicRoads Manager for Spatial Services Dr Hossein Parsa presented the new platform at last week’s OZRI conference, highlighting the possibilities that open access to the road authority’s data might bring, such as those developed during last month’s GeoNext Hackfest. “The online community is constantly pushing the boundaries to develop clever transport outcomes and solutions,” Dr Parsa said.
