LONDON, Sept 7 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) – By 2030, we should be living healthier, more prosperous lives on a greener, cleaner planet helped by robust policies to combat climate change and use precious resources, like water, wisely. That is, if world leaders live up to the promise of ambitious development goals to end poverty and hunger, and promote a more sustainable way of life, over the next 15 years. But for governments to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), due to be adopted at a U.N. summit this month, there must be a push for better data to allow progress to be tracked and leaders to be held to account, experts say. Too often data that is produced is inaccurate, driven by donor priorities, released after a long time lag or omits groups on society’s margins.

Outstanding uses of the Australian Government’s NationalMap were on show at the GovHack 2015 awards. The map is a powerful browser-based visualisation tool that provides easy access to a wealth of government geospatial data. This includes thousands of datasets from sources like the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Bureau of Meteorology and data.gov.au. GovHack 2015 is an annual national data mashup event that gives teams of developers the chance to compete and create new ways of using government open data. The awards on 5 September showcased some innovative uses of the map, including: Award-winning app Use Your Words, which tracks the tone and subject matter of news stories over time and displays them on the map by location.

ATLAS is Oxfam Novib’s online gateway to information about their projects and partners around the world. For an organisation with hundreds of partners and thousands of supporters and volunteers, ATLAS is an essential tool to share information and knowledge with this large constituency. As an interactive world map, users can search for projects and programmes by keyword, country and theme, and find information including project names, budgets, expenditures, descriptions and partners. We discussed the ATLAS tool and open data with Leo Stolk, Oxfam Novib’s ATLAS Project Leader. IATI data is used to drive ATLAS, combined with other data coming from Oxfam Novib’s internal systems, to ensure users have a detailed and context-based understanding of their projects.

PRESIDENT Jakaya Kikwete has stressed on the importance of open data use in delivery of services as the right path to gauge progress and demonstrate achievements. Speaking at the opening of Africa Open Data Conference, the first of its kind in Africa, that brought together about 500 delegates from 30 different countries in Dar es Salaam, President Kikwete said there was no doubt that Africa needed to embrace open data in her development agenda. “Data assists us with the diagnosis of social and economic challenges, informs policy choices and decisions and helps us with monitoring and evaluation of progress and impact. Much as data does not in itself change the world, it is also true, however, that it makes change possible,” Mr Kikwete philosophically explained.

President Jakaya Kikwete has asked Civil Society Organisations (SCOs) to disclose expenditures of funds received from donors that support their various development projects and human rights campaigns. Kikwete made the call during the first Africa Open Data Conference held in the city, co-hosted by the World Bank and the government, a meeting that was attended by participants from 30 countries from Africa and beyond. He said SCOs receives a lot of funds through foreign aid but fail to disclose their expenditure through extending assistance to women and children in the country. “These organisations need to be open to the government on how their money is spent especially when authorities want to assess their activities,” he said.

The block chain offers the most significant records and identity authentication technology available in more than 5,000 years, and government should take the lead in adopting it. That’s the message that Brian Forde, director of the MIT Media Lab’s Digital Currency Initiative, delivered in a recent presentation to a group of government information managers. The Huffington Post posted the presentation, in which Forde explained one of the missions of the recently-formed MIT Media Lab’s Digital Currency Initiative. Forde, whose presentation was titled, “Blockchain As The Next Platform,” said the block chain is the first real tool to replace “rubber stamp authentication protocol,” meaning paper records.

For players covering more distance on court, the stats can indicate a high level of athleticism. Depending on their level of fitness, that might be the style of play that is successful for them. However, it is an implication that they are playing more sets, increasing their time on the court.
