Briefing journalists after the end of the eighth meeting of Tanzania National Business Council (TNBC) on Wednesday night, the Council’s Chairman of Executive Committee, Ambassador Ombeni Sefue, said members of the council admitted that deliberate measures were really taken to create an enabling and conducive environment during Kikwete’s tenure as the chairman of TNBC.

The lifeblood of any digital initiative is data. Exponential expansion in the volume of patient data should lead to higher quality analysis and a database that is of ever-increasing value. It is therefore no surprise that the NHS views its data as a three tiered asset, essential to the treatment of patients, vital as a resource for research and increasingly important as a potential source of commercial licensing revenue. However, the problems with the care.data initiative highlight how public trust in digital health projects can be undermined if privacy rights are not adequately provided for.

Gartner’s Nick Heudecker has always been a bit of a party-pooper. The man who has done more to ridicule data lakes (a “fallacy”) and chastise the vendor-infested Open Data Platform (“for vendors, by vendors”) now has his sights set on big data, generally. In retiring Gartner’s Hype Cycle for big data, Heudecker blithely reasons that “big data is no longer a topic unto itself” and needn’t be treated as such. This is similar to what happened with open source: For years it was a big topic, then it became standard operating procedure for any business serious about software.

Federal authorities are marching ahead with a new framework for opening government data, a process that aims to consolidate department and agency datasets into a standardized format and make them accessible for the public. Christina Ho, deputy assistant secretary for accounting policy and financial transparency at the Treasury Department, recently provided an update on the rollout of the 2014 DATA Act, a sweeping bill that for the first time mandates a holistic system for making government spending data transparent and freely available. Ho’s team and their counterparts at the Office of Management and Budget have all but finished their work in developing common data standards, she said in an online presentation hosted by Federal Computer Week.

This map shows where people have been caught speeding in Montgomery County this summer. If DC and other local jurisdictions released more open data, we could make maps like this for places all over the region. Montgomery County now publishes detailed traffic violation data, which goes online daily here. This data allows anyone to see where and when the police are issuing citations, and to whom. The map covers the period from June 1st to August 16th in Montgomery County. The bigger the bubble, the more the driver was over the speed limit and the bigger their violation. The data I used to make the map is a good example of local jurisdictions providing open transportation-related data.

September 2, 2015 – LOS ANGELES — Attorney General Kamala D. Harris today announced the launch of OpenJustice, a first-of-its-kind criminal justice open data initiative that will release unprecedented data while being interactive and easy to use. The tool consists of two components: a Dashboard that spotlights key criminal justice indicators with user-friendly visualization tools and an Open Data Portal that publishes raw data from the California Department of Justice’s statewide repository of criminal justice datasets. The Attorney General was joined at the announcement by Congresswoman Karen Bass, Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck, and University of California Berkeley Professor Steven Raphael.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is expanding the data available on medical device-related adverse events and recalls through its OpenFDA initiative, according to a blog post at FDA Voice. The new data available through OpenFDA’s Application Programming Interface (API) includes 6,000 device classification records, 24,000 registrations of device companies and establishments, and the companies’ listings of more than 100,000 devices, write Taha A. Kass-Hout, M.D., chief health informatics officer and director of FDA’s Office of Health Informatics; Roselie A. Bright, manager of OpenFDA; and Ann M. Ferriter, FDA’s Director of Analysis and Program Operations in the Office of Compliance at the Center for Devices and Radiological Health.

A local watchdog journalist and government transparency advocate was able to dig up names of potential medical marijuana producers primarily through his own searches instead of official records requests. Peter St. Cyr, an independent journalist, published some names of people that may have applied to become the next round of medical marijuana growers and sellers in New Mexico in the Santa Fe Reporter.
