As they face the huge task of meeting these goals, they should consider drawing on a powerful new resource. Open data – data that’s freely available online for anyone to use and republish for any purpose – is rapidly being applied as a tool for sustainable development. Here are just a few examples: These innovative initiatives are focused on major societal challenges – energy supply, sustainable agriculture, healthcare access, trust in government, and women’s health. He is the author of “Open Data Now,”the first comprehensive book on this emerging field. Joel has served as Chair of the White House Task Force on Smart Disclosure and as Chief of the Consumer and Governmental Affairs Bureau of the U.S. Federal Communications Commission. For over a decade he was Editorial Director and then Executive Vice President of Consumer Reports, where he directed the development of ConsumerReports.org, the world’s largest paid-subscription information-based website.

Despite the mostly positive financial news from Apple, the one weakness that gets a lot of press is the decrease in iPad sales. Next time you need to visit the Social Security Administration, try to avoid going Monday at noon. Or at least that’s what thousands of data sets collected each day over the past few weeks indicate. That data was gathered as part of an initiative called Feedback USA, a system of kiosks that allow citizens to rate their experience visiting field offices and other agency locations. There are steps SSA can take in response to this new information, said Vicki McFadden, deputy chief customer officer at the General Services Administration during a Data Transparency Coalition event Wednesday. She suggested the agency put a note on its website warning the public of the likelihood of longer wait times. Beyond that, GSA has a additional goal for the feedback tool.

Elected officials and members of the public need to push the executive branch for more open data laws if they want to monitor how their government is working, Issa said Wednesday. If members of the public want to track how the government is spending taxpayer money as easily as they check the weather on their smartphones, they must press those in power to make it possible. That was the call from Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., at a conference Wednesday held by open data advocacy group Data Transparency Coalition. Issa, who has helped shape recent open data legislation, implored people to embrace what is possible. “Imagine if all the spending in government to all the vendors was made open and available for nonclassified work,” Issa said.
