Later this week, world leaders will adopt the post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the United Nations. As they face the huge task of meeting these goals, they should consider drawing on a powerful new resource. Open data – data that’s freely available online for anyone to use and republish for any purpose – is rapidly being applied as a tool for sustainable development. Here are just a few examples: These innovative initiatives are focused on major societal challenges – energy supply, sustainable agriculture, healthcare access, trust in government, and women’s health. By using open data from their countries’ governments, they’re drawing on a free, accessible resource with huge potential.
