The international community faces a complex environment that requires transforming the way we govern. In that sense, 2015 marks a historic milestone, as 193 Member States of the United Nations will come together to agree on the adoption of the 2030 Agenda. With the definition of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), we will set an ambitious course toward a better and more inclusive world for the next 15 years. The SDGs will be established just when governments deal with new and more defiant challenges, which require increased collaboration with multiple stakeholders to deliver innovative solutions.

Technology is making data access faster and more efficient. Increasingly society is demanding more access to information held by public authorities. The session “Open risk assessment: data” looks at open data, data interoperability and data quality. Related developments at the European Commission are on the agenda for the Commission’s Jean-Claude Burgelman and Yvo Volman. The European Medicines Agency’s Hans-Georg Eichler provides another European perspective on the opening-up of clinical trial data from industry dossiers. Katy Börner of Indiana University speaks about visualising big data and Thomson Reuters’s Dave Weller looks at how identifiers can create meaningful value from data.

Health and Human Services Chief Technology Officer Susannah Fox traveled to the United Kingdom recently to share how the U.S. uses technology and data to empower people at every level of healthcare, she says in a blog post. She represented the U.S. government at the Health and Care Innovation Expo organized by the U.K.’s National Health System (NHS) in Manchester, England. ‘[U.S.] efforts to open every spigot on every data pipeline has created a wellspring of public and private innovation that gives value and meaning to the pursuit of health that we in government had never imagined,” she says. The U.S. and NHS have collaborated both on challenges they face as well as solutions.

Space is massive. Seriously, it is really huge. It is so large that we don’t even really know how big it is. It is probably endless. Let’s be honest, even scientists at NASA don’t even know quite how far it reaches … probably. What NASA does know is that there is an ongoing fascination not just with the idea of space, but also the data being collected and, importantly, how it can be used here on Earth. Back in April, the federal agency announced that it would be giving developers and space enthusiasts the opportunity to explore the vastness of the data that it had gathered over the years through its NASA Data Portal.

Google Genomics and Amazon Web Services are said to be in a race against each other to work with the genomics industry, each hoping to appeal with their expertise in cloud storage, scalability and accessibility. They aren’t the only household names in the pursuit of DNA and genetic profiling – IBM is collaborating with hospitals to allow its Watson AI to provide genetic insights from patient DNA, and Apple continues to explore opportunities with its HealthKit technology. As cloud storage giants increasingly become an integral part of the healthcare industry, life science research is on the verge of some big changes.
