MindTrek Openmind, an international forum about the future of open source and open data, began on Tuesday in Tampere, Finland. The three-day event sees professionals from more than 15 countries discuss how businesses, governments and individuals can benefit from open solutions, software and data freely available to everyone. The conference comes as open source solutions and open data are gaining ground around the world, including in Europe and in Asia. Companies and public organizations hope these can help lower costs, create new business opportunities and increase transparency. ”I think we are now in a transition period. Closed source and closed data are moving towards openness in all the domains,” Juha Kaario, chairman of the MindTrek Association board, told gbtimes.

In April of 2014, Mayor Tony T. Yarber was placed in the seat of leadership for Mississippi’s capital and largest city, Jackson. He did so with the intent to foster more accountability and transparency in the city’s government practices. After a little over a year in office, Yarber is making good on his promise by establishing the use of data and evidence as the status quo in his administration. From revealing his “Bold New Vision” for the city of Jackson to the signing of an executive order to create an open data policy, the mayor has committed to bringing big data to the “Bold New City.” Jackson’s selection as one of the first cities to participate in the What Works Cities initiative has helped to solidify Yarber’s implementation of data and evidence in the city of Jackson.

In San Francisco, tech-savvy residents and the emergency services department created SF 72, an open-source portal of data and apps to help people cope with emergencies for 72 hours — the critical hours before responders can arrive. In Chicago, a well-developed City of Chicago Data Portal lists hundreds of sets of data — and scores of citizen-developed apps — that help residents with everything from avoiding landlords who are building code scofflaws to advising on the best transportation routes at various times of day. In Cairo, Egypt, citizen coders working with the Open Data Institute are looking at data on electricity usage patterns in hopes of devising a program to eliminate electricity outages.

The SDGs, as approved this month, are recognizing the centrality of good governance to sustainable development. This recognition of access to justice and information, with transparent and accountable institutions, is a huge leap toward creating a framework that enables individuals to pursue fair and sustainable development, as well as their human rights. This month, the UN General Assembly approved the incorporation of targets into the new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which would promote good governance. SDG 16 is to “promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels.
