Calderdale Council has announced that it will be holding three days of talks and workshops exploring the latest innovation in digital technology during Wuthering Bytes, the annual technology event in Hebden Bridge. Wuthering Bytes is a week-long festival of technology which is taking place from 26 September to 2 October at Hebden Bridge Town Hall. From 29 September to 1 October 2015 the Council will be hosting three themed days covering topics ranging from open source software and hardware, open data, the Web, citizen innovation and the Internet of Things (IoT) and how these are helping to transform public services.

When the Conservatives killed the long-form census in 2010, it appalled researchers and others who relied on the data for their work, and questions about the move dogged the government in question period. But when Canadians went to the polls a year later, the census didn’t prove to be an issue that registered with voters. Five years after eliminating the long-form questionnaire, researchers have the first set of data collected using the replacement national householder survey. And it’s not pretty. As Anne Kingston reports for Maclean’s, moving to a voluntary, shorter questionnaire “added $22 million to the cost of the 2011 census [and] the response rate dropped from 94 per cent in 2006 to 69 per cent, which makes the data totally unreliable.

Students from Cornell’s Global Health Program and the Cornell Institute for Public Affairs joined Tanzanian students and professionals in July for a two-week workshop in data collection at Kilimanjaro Medical Christian College in Moshi, Tanzania, organized by associate professor of city and regional planning Stephan Schmidt. The workshop was aimed to improve decision-making in public health, wildlife conservation and land tenure, and focused on improving the capability of partner institutions to gather data, conduct spatial analysis, and monitor and evaluate programs and projects.

The University of Chicago is getting $3.1 million from the National Science Foundation to develop a community technology platform that will measure environmental data to assess Chicago’s fitness. According to a NSF, the grant will fund the development and installation of 500 Array of Things sensors that will be placed on streetlight poles in coordination with city agencies. The sensors will contain instruments to measure temperature, barometric pressure, light, vibration, carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, ozone, ambient sound intensity, pedestrian and vehicle traffic and surface temperature. The data collected will be publicly available through the City of Chicago Data Portal and other open data platforms.

Governments across the country are striving to meet a call to transparency by upping their data collection and analysis efforts. But with this trend toward big data comes an influx of “bad data” — inaccurate, outdated or misused information that leads to ill-informed policies, misled initiatives and an ensuing lack of citizen trust. In a 2015 study, 70 percent of government officials claimed they “frequently” or “often” encounter bad data that hampers them from properly doing their jobs. The agencies being hit the hardest include social services, economic development, health and public safety — all areas that the general public takes great interest in.

Glooko, a digital health business, has added a series of devices to a recently launched platform designed to aggregate not only data from blood-gluose meters and insulin pumps, but also to help diabetes patients and caregivers view that data in context with activity and diet collected from other apps. It will be integrating a series of devices to the platform. The first is Roche’s bluetooth low energy blood-glucose meter ACCU-CHECK Connect. In the next few weeks it will add more connected devices so diabetics, caregivers and their physicians can see their health data in context. One of the companies it has inked agreements with is Abbott.
