SAN FRANCISCO: Box will begin offering customers the ability to run its service on other firms’ cloud platforms, starting with IBM SoftLayer. The plan is a notable change from the current set-up in which Box customers have to store data in Box’s data centres in the US, and could mean that Box will not have to open data centres in other regions, at least for several years. The first cloud platform on which Box will be offered is IBM SoftLayer, which will go live in 2016. Box general manager Whitney Bouck said that support for other cloud platforms, expected to be AWS and Azure, will take place over time. “It will be a select few that we vet and integrate with, starting with SoftLayer,” she told V3.

The potential for big data to have a positive impact on the way in which cities function and the quality of life of their citizens is beginning to transform from feeling intuitive, to being backed up by practical evidence. However, there are a number of debates still raging over how powerful software and coding technology ought to be best leveraged, and the associated risks, perhaps the most common of which is the issue of privacy and security. A recent report released by McKinsey & Co estimated that open data represents a $3 trillion per year opportunity for cities and businesses. Meanwhile, concurrent to the concerns over privacy, and somewhat separate from the business opportunity, the open data movement has been gaining momentum as a way to create better services.

In 2011, we formed OpenData.cz as a group of Open Data enthusiasts from Charles University and University of Economics in Prague. In that time, we started promoting Open Data among Czech public bodies as well as prospective consumers. As academicians we also started our own research in the area of Linked Open Data publication, visualization and exploration.During the first two years of our Open Data activities we have developed a lot of contacts with public bodies as well as the community of potential Open Data consumers in the Czech Republic.We had also created several interesting research results in the area of Linked Open Data.

The Department for Education (DfE) has been one of the first departments to embrace open data; teachers and policymakers are already seeing innovative services to help improve standards and pupils and parents will soon be empowered to make more informed school choices. Combining detailed, anonymised data on every pupil in the country with results from exam boards is only the start, according to Professor Nigel Shadbolt, chairman of the Open Data Institute (ODI) and principal at Jesus College, Oxford. He predicts the truly innovative breakthrough will start when education findings are combined with other datasets to allow parents and students to make more informed decisions.

But experts say it’s difficult to prove claims that police are increasingly using unnecessary or excessive force against specific communities. That’s because data is inconsistent on police stops and use-of-force incidents, including officer-involved shootings. And without enough comparative information, it’s hard to know which departments use more, or less force. “There is no current standard and there’s no best practices,” said Meredith Gamson-Smiedt, executive director of UCLA’s Center for Policing Equity.

Two mobile apps which publish openly available drone strikes data from the Bureau of Investigative Journalism have been banned from Apple’s App Store. The Metadata+ and Ephemeral+ apps were removed from the app store for reporting on drone strike deaths which Apple deemed to have breached its guidelines on “excessively rude or objectionable content”. Both apps were developed by news organisation Intercept’s editor Josh Begley as a project to highlight the publicly available data published by the Bureau of Investigative Journalism about drone strikes. Metadata+, which was forced to change its original name of Drones+ by Apple, has been available on the store since early 2014 however it was removed this week.

Welsh public sector-focused event looked at challenges around transparency and user needs; questions raised over motivation for devolved digital transformation Technology adoption, promoting trust around open data use and efforts to better understand opportunities and principles of blockchain in government were among key topics at this year’s Wales-focused GovCamp Cymru event. Held at the Pierhead building in Cardiff Bay on Saturday, the ‘unconference’ brought together stakeholders across the private, public and voluntary sectors to look at issues facing Welsh authorities concerning governance and public service delivery. The venue from this year’s camp was provided by the National Assembly for Wales.
