Mayor Greg Fischer and Metro Chief of Innovation Ted Smith discussed Louisville’s progress toward fiber Internet at Open Coffee on Monday morning. In September, Google announced that Louisville is on the list to potentially become a Google Fiber City. “Companies like Google noticed the outlier methods we were employing and it was intriguing to them,” Fischer said. His examples of these innovations included our partnerships with Propeller Health to track asthma sufferers in the city; public health open data; and work with Google transit and Google’s Get Your Business Online program. When Louisville originally applied for Google Fiber, the city was one of 4,000 proposals. “That’s a crazy big number,” said Smith. So Google came up with the Google Checklist to help narrow the field.

More data may be coming to Miami-Dade County residents. The county commission will take a look at a resolution Tuesday that would try to make county numbers and information more accessible to the public. Right now, if someone wants information on county housing inventory or wages, that person has to make a request, go record by record and make their own spreadsheet. But Miami-Dade County is trying to make it so that more data is stored online in a format that is  easy to use and understand. It’s a concept called “open-data,” and at the heart of it is the hope that by making more numbers easy to get,  it adds a certain transparency to governmental functions.

The state of California is ahead of the curve on changing criminal justice policy, and its attorney general is leading the way. In light of the killing of unarmed Black people by police throughout the U.S., members of the public have demanded reform of law enforcement policies, practices and procedures, and the way the police interact with the communities they serve.  One of the policy demands of the #BlackLivesMatter movement, Campaign Zero and others has been law enforcement transparency, including data collection on police stops, arrests and use of force, as well as making the information available to the public. Kamala Harris—the first woman, African-American and Asian-American to become attorney general of California—recently unveiled a new initiative called OpenJustice.

Tech developers will compete to solve local civic issues on Saturday, Oct. 10 during the Western New York Civic Hackathon. For 13 hours, teams will face off to deliver the best technological solution to issues facing the region. The competition, which will award $3,500 in cash prizes, will focus specifically on issues of property blight, transportation, and public policy. Leaders from regional tech and advocacy communities will provide guidance as teams compete for the $2,000 grand prize. Elaina Mulé is the director of research and public policy at the United Way of Buffalo and Erie County, one of the organizations sponsoring the event. She said Western New York is a hub for tech professionals, and wants to match developers with data sources.

The Open Government Partnership (OGP) in collaboration with the Performance Management and Service Delivery Directorate (PMSD) and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) Friday 2nd October, 2015 presented its midterm self-assessment report to President Ernest Bai Koroma at State House, Freetown. The presentation was to brief the president on the eleven commitments made in the OGP process. Receiving the report, President Koroma said the assessment report is in fulfilment of his dream immediately after coming to governance, when he called for continuous open discussions to create public awareness about governance and what is expected from the citizenry. That, he said, gave birth to the Open Government Initiative (OGI).

A new raft of data on land transactions will be made available for re-use from the end of the month. Land Registry has announced that, two year after it made Price Paid Data available under the Open Government Licence, it is extending the availability to Additional Price Paid Data, which captures transactions from 14 October 2013 to the current month. It said this will provide access to approximately 6,600 additional transactions per month, and includes sales to non-private individuals, transfers under power of sale and repossessions, and buy-to-let transactions where they can be identified by a mortgage. A new ‘other’ property type field will be added to the current fields to show non-residential properties.
