The multi-million pound Consumer Data Research Centre (CDRC) initiative, commissioned by the Economic and Social Research Council, is a collaboration between the UK’s leading universities and a growing list of industry partners to better understand the millions of data points generated each day. Bringing together the universities of Leeds, Liverpool, Oxford and University College London, the CDRC said it has created a safe and secure data infrastructure which seeks to share these insights with academia, industry and the public at large. Major retailers, local government organisations and businesses will share their data with the centre to help understand complex patterns of consumer behaviour. Backers promise that privacy will be protected.

To our dear cousins in North America, the U.K. must seem like a terribly eccentric place. We have an unelected head of state who has reigned for over half a century; our head of government chooses half of the legislature, who debate in a crumbling palace which doesn’t have enough seats to fit them all; and our elected representatives are not allowed to resign due to a parliamentary quirk that goes back to 1624. Twenty-first century it is certainly not. The same goes for the way in which our politics operates. Unlike the U.S. and Canada, which have some transparency around who is lobbying public officials, few — apart from those who reside within the “Westminster bubble” — know who is trying to influence our political system.

TAIPEI, Taiwan — The National Development Council (NDC) yesterday announced its newest foray into the open data sector with the announcement of the Taiwan Open Data Center (TODC) and Sheethub.com, platforms supported by the government and cooperation from private enterprise. NDC Deputy Minister Kao Shien-quey (高仙桂) stated her beliefs that with the implementation of collaboration between the government and private sectors, open data on the platform will be optimized to bank on creative applications from the public, increase the quality of the government’s data and become an invaluable asset for the international open data community.
