This week was a timely one for GTECH, the public sector technology event in Ottawa. As Canada ushered in a new government, it was a perfect time to consider the future of open data initiatives in Canada. Microsoft Canada’s open source guru Keith Loo was at the conference, hammering home the Redmond-based firm’s commitment to all things open. Loo’s mission has direct relevance to CIOs, he said, who should be folding open data from government organizations into their operations. “There is a wealth of useful information that can be derived from open data – and it’s available for free! CIOs should care because this is a low-cost means of enriching their platforms by layering additional sources of data,” he said.

The Dubai Civil Defence launched the Personal Dashboard, which will allow the emirate’s residents and visitors to connect to its services and import their personal data and view them on a great intuitive interface. This way will allow residents and visitors to visualise data and keep them informed and connected, said a statement. The Personal Dashboard will empower citizens, residents and visitors by connecting them to their needs making their daily ‘city interactions’ more efficient and seamless, it said. Students from Xiamen University School of Management in South East China joined those from Newcastle University Business School for an internship that will help shape an FSB campaign on open data A campaign by the Federation of Small Businesses to have the region recognised as a leader in the innovative use of open data has been given a shot in the arm through a project run by students from both the North East and China. Three young people from Xiamen University School of Management in South East China visited Newcastle for a three-week internship, during which they worked alongside four Newcastle University Business School students. The project saw the group research how open data is used around the world and how improved accessibility to it can support start-ups and business growth.

In Pader, Uganda, Oyoo Benson oversees the field operations of the Northern Uganda Medical Mission (NUMEM). Launched in 2012, NUMEM has only been active for three years, but in just this short time, it has seen astronomical growth in reaching its targeted populations. Annually, NUMEM consults with over 5,000 patients, a number that has skyrocketed up over 550% in the last two years. When asked about the efficiency of NUMEM’s rapid growth, Benson points to a singular reason: quality data. NUMEM is one of the only community-based health centers in Pader to incorporate data into its operations structure.

From the office of Mayor Tony Yarber: The City of Jackson urges citizens to complete a new survey that will help the city move forward with its open data initiative. Last month, Mayor Tony T. Yarber signed an executive order that will pave the way for a city government that’s more open, transparent and data driven. This concept was centered on the city’s engagement with Bloomberg Philanthropies’ What Works Cities initiative. As a part of that initiative, Jackson is committed to releasing key data sets within the city to its citizens, businesses, and organizations. The goal is to make constituents more informed about what’s occurring within the city. Leaders in Pittsburgh and the surrounding Allegheny County were looking for ways to make data-driven decisions, but they hit a major snag — there just wasn’t much government data available in western Pennsylvania. Now, the city and the county are seeking to change that by teaming up with a group of researchers at the University of Pittsburgh to create a new open data portal for the region, known as the Western Pennsylvania Regional Data Center. “When I hired the county manager a couple years ago, he was kind of questioning how we made decisions, and rightly so,” Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald told StateScoop. “But we didn’t have data to do it … so we’ve started to work together with the city on a whole lot of issues.

The Cabinet Office has hosted an event in an attempt to solve the problem of youth unemployment in the UK through the use of open government datasets. The so-called Job Hack event saw technology professionals from across the industry come together with young people to use open data to think of ways to reduce the number of young people not in work or education. The participants used datasets including statistics on the number of young people not in education, employment or training (Neet), as well as on school performance, apprenticeship vacancies, earning outcomes and available educational options. Matt Hancock, minister for the Cabinet Office, said: “I’m here because I believe passionately, like all of you do, in the power of technology to unleash human ingenuity.

(TNS) — A program that will allow Broomfield residents to access raw data about their city is expected to launch in the coming weeks. Ernesto Chavez, chief technology officer with Broomfield, mentioned the project publicly for the first time Tuesday evening at a City Council study session. Adrian Kropp, GIS manager, said the project started internally around September and will roll out in phases as data is added. Initially the map, which will be accessible electronically, will feature streets, zones and city boundaries, but in the future Chavez said he hopes to add layers to that foundation. The program is similar to what other municipalities have launched to provide data to the public. It will be free and downloadable into a spreadsheet.

It’s easy to feel sometimes like we’re awash in lots of numbers in the news. There are all kinds of data about foreclosures, costs of health, poverty, you name it. But it’s all just numbers. It can be hard to look through the data to see the real people beneath. Numbers don’t tell you about moms struggling, hungry kids, or people who sleep on concrete at night. Alex B. Hill has been thinking a lot about the separation of big numbers and real people. Hill heads a project called DETROITography. He recently spoke and blogged about how hard it is to be empathetic about data, but also how it reveals a lot about the struggles of individuals. “A lot of times it’s easy to list the big numbers and feel like that’s going to have an impact, but humans can’t process big numbers,” he says.
