Big Data. Little Barriers. A day of open data, technology and civic engagement Public data used in the right way, helps solve public problems and Hack For Reno Summit wants to know what data Reno needs to solve its problems. On Nov. 7 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the University of Nevada, Reno Innevation Center, Code For Reno and the City of Reno are inviting government workers, journalists, developers, students, artists, citizen groups and the public to begin a conversation about building a smarter city using open data. Attendees will listen to speakers provide examples and context for useful data, then work together to find out what problems Reno faces and how data can help. In the spring, Hack For Reno will host a hackathon to create applications to put the data to use.

Geneva/ Panama, 24 October 2015 – Hurricane Patricia was downgraded to a tropical depression and continues its passage on land northeast of Zacatecas, so in the coming hours it will cause heavy rains from 75 to 150 millimetres (mm) in Coahuila, Nuevo Leon and Tamaulipas as reported by the Mexican Weather Service. The authorities recommend the public be aware of the heavy rains that will continue in the country.

(Image via Kamran Jebreili/AP) Dubai’s goal of becoming the smart city of the Middle East got a little closer this week when they announced they would be drawing up a Dubai Data Law. The new law, announced on Twitter by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, vice president and prime minister of the UAE and ruler of Dubai, will allow the sharing of government data with the private sector. UAE newspaper The National reports that the new law would make the data accessible to researchers, investors and service developers via an integrated platform.

As Hurricane Patricia bears down on Mexico, authorities and emergency managers are working to anticipate and respond to its impact on the population. Doing so requires a multitude of data sources related to the storm and its path, demographics, health facility locations, power infrastructure, road networks, topography, and more. To facilitate such efforts, Direct Relief is making the data it uses to guide response efforts available to the global community. Critical datasets will be posted to this open data portal regularly. All data is available for download in multiple formats. ArcGIS Online users may also directly link to this site.

She had come to share her new Web site, CaBiBrags.com, which allows Capital Bikeshare users to compete for the highest mileage. “I’m pretty sure I win the ‘Queen of the Nerds’ award tonight!” said Chizek Frouard, 31, a resident of Bethesda and an astronomer, pointing to the bright-blue astronaut costume she’d worn in the pre-Halloween spirit.

Cape Town wants to capitalise on fibre The City of Cape Town plans to spend R185-million in the current financial year on its broadband initiative. The City and province has additional funding to support digital initiatives from the Western Cape Government of R11,8-million for broadband infrastructure and R23,7-million for its Digital Inclusion Project. Under this project, 180 new Wi-Fi access points were introduced in 2014/15 and a further 120 points will follow by year-end. “Our network is now robust and extensive enough to be leveraged by the private sector for inclusive growth and economic development,” says Andre Stelzner, CIO of the City of Cape Town, to members of Accelerate Cape Town (ACT), at a recent forum on “Digital Cape Town: Creating a Smart City”.

Hey hackers, got any plans for tomorrow (that don’t involve watching rugby)? There’s still time to sign up for one of three events designed to show you how to access and use datasets held by the government. Organised by Code4SA under the theme of Liberate SA’s Data and based on the Data Quest format that’s worked well at previous events, there’s workshops being held in Cape Town, Durban and Pretoria, which run from 9am to 4pm (so you can still watch the ‘Boks). I’ll be at the Pretoria event to say hi and help out the organisers there. There’s T-Shirts and prizes on offer for teams who can make the best use of open data and turn it into compelling visual stories over the course of the day. All you need is some spare time and your own laptop.
