Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform Brendan Howlin has announced the establishment of an Open Data Governance Board with Inspirefest 2016 speaker Emer Coleman at its helm. The Open Data Governance Board will be responsible with advising the Irish Government on a national strategy for its Open Data Initiative, which was launched in July of last year. Open data in government is about making the data held by public bodies available and easy to access online so that it can be reused and redistributed. The Minister cited the potential of open data to “deliver real economic, social and democtratic benefits across society” in a statement released with the announcement today (23 October).

Bath is the “perfect place” to set the next James Bond film Bath is the “perfect place” to set the next James Bond movie, according to a government minister. The city was praised for its creative and digital industries. Digital economy minister, Ed Vaizey, said Bath was “leading the way” in digital terms. He was responding to a question from Bath MP Ben Howlett on what work is being done to develop the sector even further. Mr Vaizey said: “We continue to support tech hubs all across the country and I was particularly pleased to recognise Bath Hacked in a speech yesterday I gave on smarter cities where Bath is leading the way in smart city technology and the internet of things. They are so high tech they would be the perfect place to set the next Bond movie when it is set in the UK.

Mor Rubinstein is the community coordinator and the research lead of the Global Open Data Index, a civil society audit of open data publishing, at Open Knowledge. According to the Homeland Security Investigations agency, one in five girls and one in 10 boys in the United States will be sexually exploited before they reach adulthood. Protecting victims and catching offenders has been the focus of thousands of federal, state and local law enforcement agents. In 2011, the HSI Cyber Crimes Center’s Child Exploitation Investigations Unit (CEIU) created the National Child Victim Identification Program to identify and rescue child victims, apprehend offenders and locate crime scenes. The program included a Victim Identification Laboratory where seized images, videos, audio and metadata are analyzed, enhanced and clarified. Investigation of child pornography trafficking generates more data than many law enforcement agencies can process.
