SACRAMENTO November 17, 2015 – State Treasurer John Chiang unveiled a new open data website today, providing important details about $1.5 trillion in debt issued by state and local government entities as part of his ongoing efforts to promote transparency in government. The site, debtwatch.treasurer.ca.gov, makes it easier for taxpayers to track proposed and issued debt, cost of issuance, and bond and tax election results. “The state and its local governments have borrowed more than $1.5 trillion from Wall Street over the past three decades to build roads, schools, and other critical public works,” said Chiang. “Bonds are not free money and, indeed, obligate the public to repay them through higher taxes and fees.

LOS ANGELES —California’s treasurer has launched an open data website that he says will make it easier to analyze $1.5 trillion in debt issued in the state since 1984. State Treasurer John Chiang said during a presentation in Sacramento Monday that his aim is to empower Californians to hold the government accountable for its borrowing decisions. Chiang said he also wanted to make the information available to researchers, journalists and investors. “I never want another Bell to happen,” Chiang said. The treasurer was referring to the city that saw eight former city leaders prosecuted in 2014 for stealing millions from city coffers. The city also defaulted on a $30 million private activity bond to Dexia, a Belgium bank.

California is launching a new open data portal that details the state’s outstanding $1.5 trillion in debt. The site will allow residents to track proposed and issued debt, cost of issuance, and bond and tax election results. The portal is the latest entrant in a plethora of fragmented open data portals launched across the various arms of California government. The site’s debt-related information covers more than 30 years, from 1984 to the present. Included are more than 2.8 million fields of data, which will be updated monthly. The data will go to the Treasurer’s California Debt and Investment Advisory Commission (CDIAC). CDIAC has offered some of this debt data for years, but the new portal goes a step further offering a broader range of data sets and the ability to visualize trends.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s pro-investment approaches will draw investments into the country and encourage companies to use Malaysia as a production base in light of a stronger US economy. Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Abdul Wahid Omar said as the US economy strengthens, it is seeing a reversal of investment flows away from emerging markets back into the US. “With the higher US interest rates, should they decide to increase it, we will see more inflows into US dollars and this will affect not just Malaysia, but all emerging markets too,” he told reporters after opening the Malaysia Statistics Conference 2015 here yesterday, adding that this is more with respect to portfolio investments.

But when it comes to the direct involvement of citizens and users in collaborative mapping initiatives, Italy is leading the way. From the far north to the southernmost extremity of the Italian boot, these projects are contributing to a radical re-thinking of the use of public spaces. At the same time, they’re fostering the active participation of residents in the development of their urban neighborhoods. The challenge faced by many of these initiatives is making collaborative mapping a tool for new types of relationships with local authorities, in order to support innovative policy process.
