The Open Banking Working Group – a collective of banking, open data and FinTech professionals, and wider business and consumer groups – has been formed at the request of the UK Government. Its aim is to develop a framework for adopting an open API standard across banking and explore how open banking will impact consumers, regulators and industry. This initiative builds upon the UK Government’s prior call for evidence on data sharing and open data in banking. The working group co-chairs, steering committee, secretariat and user reference group members are listed in the spreadsheet below (these are subject to change).

Jakarta’s Open Data Lab headed east to Banda Aceh to help city officials build an open data practice from scratch. The Lab worked with citizens to identify datasets they need, and helped officials build trust to release these datasets. Here’s how they did it and what they learnt. The team first brought together journalists, NGOs and researchers to understand what data they needed to help improve public services. The groups wanted to know more about how the city’s schools performed, and ranked the most useful education datasets. “Prioritising these datasets mean that citizens are far more likely to engage with the data to drive change,” the Lab said. Before this experiment, few of the citizens knew of their right to request for government information.

I recently spent the weekend up in the lakes region of New Hampshire, and made the rounds of all the various country stores and craft shops that are a staple of the area. In one shop, I noticed something I hadn’t seen in a long time: a large set of Russian nesting dolls. The quality, craftsmanship, and level of detail were impressive. The Open Data Institute in partnership with the EU have created free, publicly available e-learning modules on Open Data in English and French. The programme has been designed to enable users to discover what open data is and how it is changing the lives of everyone on our planet. Each of the 13 modules contains short (2-3 minute) video and text introductions to key concepts in open data. For example, module 9 on data formats and module 6 on measuring success for open data. This past weekend, leading data scientists and practitioners gathered for what was hailed as another successful Open Data Science conference in San Francisco. Why would 1,100 people wake up early on a Saturday morning to attend ODSC West? Among many reasons, ODSC West offered attendees 20 hands-on workshops and more than 50 talks, ranging from introductory talks on Python And R in Data science to more advanced topics like machine learning and predictive analytics. ODSC West attracted world-renowned speakers, including data science luminaries Brian Granger, Wes McKinney, Anthony Goldbloom, Claudia Perlich, Owen Zhang and Andreas Mueller. Participants were introduced to open source tools like scikit-learn and Jupyter and encouraged to become their contributors.
