Vapor IO first publicly emerged earlier this year with plans to build a new type of data center server system as well as a new open-source software platform called Open Data Center Runtime Environment (OpenDCRE) to help control data centers. After several months of development and fine-tuning this year, OpenDCRE is now being made as Generally Available by Vapor IO. “We’ve released the code into the wild via github and dockerhub,” Cole Crawford, founder and CEO of Vapor IO, told ServerWatch. “We’ve announced partners standardizing on it, and we’ve introduced an IPMI bridge so legacy infrastructure can be supported.” OpenDCRE is a technology that can help enable the automation of data center infrastructure by providing a common platform for infrastructure communications.

In the future, Greenwood residents would be able to find out where cars and homes have been broken into, apply for building permits online and easily look up data on how their tax dollars are spent. That is the goal of Greenwood Mayor Mark Myers, after joining Indianapolis, Zionsville and Fishers in a project to compile data on one website. The project is part of a federal initiative to make more public information and data available online. The group will work together on open data policies and share ideas. They also are working to get more communities involved, according to a news release.

OpenCon 2014 was an epic milestone for the global research community. OpenCon 2015 was different. OpenCon 2015 was a storm. Never have I seen such energy, such drive, such raw creativity unleashed than on the few days we had in Brussels. Designed to bring together students and early career researchers from all facets of research and from all corners of the globe, OpenCon 2015 is about empowering the research community to advance open data, open access, and open education. Throughout the event, I began to wonder whether we might be using the wrong words to describe what we do. We talk about ‘open’ as in free to read, free to access, free to remix and re-use, etc. – some or all of these things depending on who you talk to.

We take archives pretty seriously at the Bank and if you’ve not already checked it out, we recently launched the Open Archives site here at the Bank which offer a broad perspective of the Bank’s activities over the last 70 years, and the Oral History Program which capture history through interviews with former staff. A smart city is a good thing. But besides the intelligence of its citizens, what does it mean? It translates to the intelligence of the things that people have built in and for the city itself, so that there’s a certain self-reliance that can also support a symbiotic relationship with its residents that use bike paths, outdoor spaces, and LEED buildings. Engineers at the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District have their own ideas to heighten the city’s IQ. While 1.2 billion gallons of water wash through Chicago every day at a cost of $50 million per year, they want an energy neutral status by 2023. If they can successfully reduce energy consumed and produce power needed onsite, they’ll set the standard as the largest wastewater treatment authority in the nation to self-sufficiency.

The largest global big data festival, Big Data Week, has started this week and has been welcomed to Milton Keynes. Running from November 23 until November 28, the week aims to inspire more individuals and enterprises to start a data project to tap into potential growth and look at day-to-day practical use. Both local initiative MK:Smart and Milton Keynes-based next generation analytical data management platform Zizo have welcomed the week and shown support in raising awareness about its value. MK:Smart is an initiative led by The Open University, Milton Keynes Council and BT, which was set up to target ways of supporting economic growth and use big data to manager key infrastructure networks as part of a smart city project.

California’s new open data website, DebtWatch, provides details about $1.5 trillion in debt issued by state and local government entities. With the Socrata-powered site, users can track proposed and issued debt, cost of issuance as well as bond and tax election results. The debt-related information on the site goes back to 1984, includes more than 2.8 million fields of data and will be updated monthly. (TNS) — When the Center for Open Policing recently reached a settlement with the city of Seattle that garnered it more than $30,000 and access to GPS data on the location of police vehicles, it was the latest in a string of legal victories for the shoestring organization. Over the past several years, the organization has sued the city of Seattle, the State Patrol and the Tacoma Police Department over access to public records and strategically rolled the resulting financial victories into its work. The three activists behind the Seattle-based group — Eric Rachner, 39; Phil Mocek, 41; and Ben Livingston, 36 — are computer-software whizzes whose personal brushes with the law fueled their efforts, forged their bond and led them to join forces in 2012.
