NEEDHAM, Mass.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–The Object Management Group® (OMG®) announced today the recent approval of the Financial Instrument Global Identifier (FIGI™) standard, which marks a major advancement in the identification of financial instruments. Almost every aspect of instrument management is based on closed systems that use proprietary identifiers which are privately owned and licensed. Settlement of deals may require traders, investors, and brokers to translate between multiple proprietary identifier formats to determine key features of an instrument. The FIGI standard removes this obstacle by specifying the structure and semantics of Global Identifiers, how they are constructed and validated, and their relationship with other financial information.

Technology has come a long way since the days of snail mail and the shrill sounds of fax machines. Remember when the best interoffice communication tool was scribbling a note on a piece of paper, folding it into the shape of a football and “punting” it across the room? Our ability to disseminate all types of government data has become much more efficient, and one would think local and state institutions would take advantage of this technology for their business intelligence projects. But, unfortunately, many of these organizations are still relying on cumbersome, expensive tools rather than embracing the benefits of cloud-based software-as-a-service (SaaS) tech solutions. THIS year, newspapers have been filled with dramatic headlines about a supposed surge in murders. Many cities saw large jumps in crime during the first half of the year: the murder rate rose 48% and 59% compared to the same period the previous year in Baltimore and St Louis, respectively. At the same time, police have been under increased scrutiny: the deaths of Freddie Gray in Baltimore and Michael Brown in Ferguson at police hands have sparked large protests around the country. The fatal shooting of Laquan McDonald by a cop, also last year, did not spark protests because by the time a video of the killing was released on November 24, 2015, the officer had been charged with murder.

In a bid to build trust among its citizens, Indianapolis announced it released information about potentially controversial police incidents in a new open data portal. Over the last year, the city worked with local Code for America fellows to gather data and build the portal, and, on Nov. 16, the city posted three new data sets to the site. Information on police complaints, use-of-force incidents and officer-involved shootings is now all freely available. Previously, it was only accessible via a public records request.

KARACHI, Pakistan — Big data, the information flow from digital communications analysis, is being used in the developed world to tackle socio-economic challenges such as the early identification and prevention of diseases. There has been much less progress in using such information sources in the developing world. But that is beginning to change. Given the ubiquity of mobile phones throughout the world, governments can learn a great deal about their populations by utilizing the huge amounts of data collected by mobile operators, said Kenth Engo-Monsen, senior data scientist at Telenor Research, an arm of the Norwegian mobile operator.

Headd is the fiery former embattled Chief Data Officer of the City of Philadelphia, past executive with Code for America and self-identified civil servant. He spent 10 years living in Wilmington while serving an array of Delaware state government jobs beginning in 1999. Now he lives in upstate New York, while traveling frequently to conferences and tech events to evangelize for Accela, a Silicon Valley government IT services company. He was back in Delaware for the first time in several years last week to speak at our Delaware Innovation Week Dev Talks, which brought nearly 70 technologists to the coIN Loft in Wilmington.

During the first day, attendees will be introduced to the main concepts and possible uses of Open Data, with a view of generating innovative apps and services for citizens. The workshop will also feature an overview of the Las Palmas Open Data portal architecture, exploring how public data is linked to it, and how best to reuse the data shared. The second day will be fully devoted to creating app and service prototypes in teams, which will then be presented to a panel of experts and public administration representatives.
