New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio recently signed a handful of bills to help the administration meet its goal of making its open data portal’s store of information more accessible. The first bill, according to Politico, allows the city’s Department of Information Technology & Telecommunications (DoITT) to preserve row data that is subject to permanent removal or replacement and to create standards about when and how to split up big, bulky data sets as archival and technical. The second measure requires the creation of a plain language data dictionary to go along with each dataset so that individuals can understand the data being presented. The third bill requires city agencies respond to open data requests within a two month window.

The EU’s latest Earth observer, Sentinel-2a, has gone operational. Users are now able to download its images of the planet, although they will need to register first. The Sentinel, which has been undergoing in-orbit testing since its launch back in June, views the land surface in optical and infrared light. Its pictures will be used by scientists to track everything from the growth of megacities to the variable yields of the world’s most important food crops. And researchers will, of course, use 2a’s acquisitions prominently in climate studies (examples are being shown at the COP21 talks in Paris). But the EU’s free and open data policy means anyone can now download and play with the images.

Wikipedia has launched a new artificially intelligent tool to highlight new edits deemed to be ‘low quality’ in an effort to help its human editors to quickly spot suspicious or false changes to articles. The website, which can be edited by anyone and sees 10 edits made every second, said the Objective Revision Evaluation Service (ORES) has been designed to act “like a pair of X-ray specs. ” Combining open data and open source machine learning algorithms, the editor can spot article edits likely to be low quality based on the language used and context. These edits are then flagged up for a human editor who will make the final decision.
