The federal government will push agencies to release more of the data they hold and create to the public under a new open data policy released yesterday alongside its innovation statement. The new ‘public data policy statement’ [pdf] labels the data held by the federal government a “strategic national resource” that could have a transformative effect on the growth of the economy, service delivery and policy outcomes, the document states. It says the release of anonymised government data can create opportunities that “neither government or business can currently envisage”.

In a technerd-enviro-urbanist love story, Tommy Mitchell, a hardware designer, and Andy Glass, a software engineer, met six months ago at a fellowship in Long Island City, Queens. Their shared obsession with the crux of the environment, smart cities, data and the Internet of Things led them to New York City’s civic tech challenge Big Apps 2015. On a new world map of smog, a giant dark bubble hovers over Beijing. The city, now in the middle of its first-ever emergency “red alert” for air pollution, has closed schools and temporarily taken cars off the road as smog keeps getting worse. But scrolling around the map—which updates pollution levels in real time—it’s quickly obvious that Beijing isn’t the only place with a problem. While cities with blue bubbles have clean air, the darker the bubble gets, the more polluted it is. In New Delhi on Monday, the air quality index made it up to 377 (Beijing was 253). In the U.S., the EPA considers any measurement over 200 very unhealthy, and over 300 hazardous.

Great steps have been made in open data in the last few years. Most figures for the UK economy can be found online and the creation of the Office for Budget Responsibility means that official forecasts, too, are now available. But they have not, so far, been expressed in a way that’s easy to understand. So The Spectator has come up with this dashboard, which shows historic and projected data for the main economic indicators. And some other graphs that we at the Spectator find interesting:- 1. State Schools vs Private Schools This chart shows the average A-Level points for the top state and private schools.
