Mozilla recently launched a “content blocker” for iOS 9. In spite of the name, the app is actually designed to only block ads that are trackers. The new app, called Focus by Firefox, takes advantage of iOS 9’s content-blocking feature. Users of the app will also need to access the Settings feature of iOS to set up content blocking. Fortunately, the app provides users with a step-by-step configuration guide. Even though the app uses the content-blocking feature of iOS 9, it doesn’t block all ads. Instead, it just blocks ads that trackers. Trackers are ad units that collect data about a user’s activity across multiple websites or apps, some of which might not be owned by the data collector. Trackers also aggregate and share the data collected.

The UK’s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has embraced open data for a number of initiatives – including mapping of floodplains. The World Bank has established a Climate Change Knowledge Portal, dedicated to sharing data and information in support of the Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery. But we need to get more governments and organisations on board.

The GFIA panel session, organised by GODAN (with GFAR and CTA), explored open data for agricultural innovation by linking different actors of the open data value chain together. Data on all aspects of agriculture increases every year. Yet often this data sits in government files and company offices, locked-up away from innovators. Open data brings a different approach: accessible and reusable data – a shared and renewable innovation resource. This sessions explored the challenges and potential benefits of open data, building on the discussion from the agriculture track at the 2015 Africa Open Data Conference. Valeria Pesce (GFAR) moderated the panel and began with questions about challenges and ended with questions on potential benefits of open data.

With the buzz of a smartphone, residents of Lexington, Ky., might receive anything from updates on new construction in their neighborhoods to changes in their leaf collection schedule. The city’s opt-in notification platform, CityGram, launched last year. Since that time nearly 75,000 text messages and emails have been sent to more than 700 residents on code enforcement, building permits, sale foreclosures and leaf collection, says Jonathan Hollinger, administrative officer senior for Lexington’s Planning, Preservation and Development Department. Lexington’s launch of CityGram speaks to a national movement of local and state governments responding to citizens’ needs for more information in a faster and more accessible format.

LA-based artist Refik Anadol has turned the media wall of the 350 Mission Building in San Francisco into otherworldly digital sculptures. The public art work is called Virtual Depictions and uses parametric data from the city to create the stunning visuals. To do this Anadol used publicly available frozen datasets — on everything from transportation to city management, museum data and housing —put online by the city of San Francisco as part of their open data portal initiative SF OpenData. Meant for developers, analysts, residents, and whoever else wants to use it, Anadol combined it with Twitter’s real-time API service.

What did the 49 co-sponsors of a resolution to block the Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean Power Plan have in common? A total of $52 million in political contributions from the oil and gas, electric utilities and coal mining industries to their campaigns. The NRDC Action Fund, a 501(c)(4) whose mission is to build political support for protecting the planet and its people, spotlighted these contributions in its new analysis of open data provided by the Sunlight Foundation. This information is captured in WhoVotesDirty.com, an innovative project of the NRDC Action Fund that shows: The Sunlight Foundation’s data are based on contributions from the oil and gas, electric utilities, and coal mining sectors, as reported to the Federal Election Commission.

For 27 years, the West African country was ruled by Blaise Compaoré, before he was ousted in a popular uprising in October 2014. After a coup this September briefly unseated the interim government and the elections planned for October were postponed, the situation in the country was tense. But last Tuesday Roch Marc Kabore was declared president after an election that observers said was characterised by “calm and serenity” Burkina Faso’s election was also a first for other reasons, says Liz Carolan, international development manager at the Open Data Institute in London, United Kingdom.
