The UK government is ‘unleashing’ 1000 farming datasets in a bid to boost the productivity of its farmers and food industry – and help business and consumer decision-making. The freely available information will include climate data, soil moisture readings and satellite data, which will be used to improve crop yields and quality as well as deal with disease outbreaks. The data will be used to help the farming sector deal with an increasingly unpredictable climate, including extended periods of drought in some areas and flooding in others. “With a rapidly growing global population, it is essential that farmers, suppliers and consumers have the data they need to make informed choices,” said Jeni Tennison, technical director at the Open Data Institute (ODI).

Some nine out of 10 people believe that flood risk information should be included on material about properties for sale, according to a study from the Association of British Insurers (ABI). At present no property search websites include flood risk information for the location of properties they list despite having data on anything from school catchment areas to most commonly read newspapers in the area, the ABI points out, adding that there is also a lack of flood risk information on brochures for new build properties. The association is calling for estate agents and property search websites to automatically provide traffic light style information indicating flood risk for the locations of the homes they list. This should be based on publicly available Environment Agency data.

“Did poverty drop in Latin America because of good policies or good luck?” I am often asked this question after I tell people that poverty in the region fell from 40 to 25 percent between 2003 and 2013. The answer is a bit of both. As the chart below demonstrates, there is no question that the poor living in countries that were favored by high commodity prices benefited more than those in other countries. More to the point, as the chart also highlights, the tremendous rise in revenues coming from the boom in commodity prices led to an increase in labor income that helps explain much of the poverty reduction seen in commodity exporting countries. To me, however, an interesting story hides behind the line of the non-commodity exporting countries.
