Oakville has been ranked one of Canada’s most open cities. The magazine Public Sector Digest, in partnership with Canada’s Open Data Exchange, ranked the town ninth among 34 municipalities across Canada in the area of open data for 2015. Researchers looked at what types of data the cities made available to the public, in what format and at what frequency in making their decision. Edmonton received the title of most open city in Canada for 2015 followed by Toronto, Surrey, Ottawa and London. The group said open data policies make government more transparent and accountable; provide the public sector with valuable data for analysis and reuse; and cut costs for things like information requests coming from the public and media. January 21, 2016 – Saint Lucia’s first ever Mapathon was launched on 19 January 2016. The event dubbed “Map Saint Lucia,” encourages participants to engage in mapping projects of economic and social value for Saint Lucia via Openstreetmap.org. The highly collaborative and interactive exercise will provide a better understanding about the island’s landscape, whilst improving the discoverability of places and communities island-wide. The Mapathon will also demonstrate how technical innovators and entrepreneurs can use mapping data for national development. “Map Saint Lucia” is being is being held under the auspices of the Ministry of the Public Service, Information and Broadcasting as one of the activities commemorating Saint Lucia’s 37th Independence Anniversary.

Does the way BuzzFeed and the BBC have used algorithms to build a story have a potential impact on PR, asks Robert Bownes of Profusion Tennis recently joined the growing league of sports that are (allegedly) riddled with corruption. Whether any tennis players are actually at fault remains to be seen. However, the investigation by BuzzFeed and the BBC was notable for serving up some tasty data science. BuzzFeed’s John Templon wrote algorithms that mined betting data to identify unusual patterns and possible fixes. This could be a game-changer for PRs for a few reasons.  It’s no secret that fewer and fewer journalists are being asked to write more and more copy.  Only the most short-sighted PR would say this is a good thing.

Thousands of people protested in front of Macedonia’s government building on December 28, 2015, demanding new measures to alleviate the country’s suffocating air pollution. The first speaker to address the crowd was Gorjan Jovanovski, a developer of the Web-based and Android application “Moj Vozduh” (My Air), which uses open data to display levels of air pollution throughout Macedonia. High pollution levels have been plaguing Macedonia for years, especially the cities of Skopje and Tetovo, which are among Europe’s most polluted areas. In 2012, Global Voices reported on activists’ efforts to make the results of air-quality monitoring more visible, following a decision by the nation’s authorities to stop publishing the data online.

There is broad support among Europeans for the contribution of the CAP to the European Commission’s top priorities, according to a new Eurobarometer survey, with nearly half of the respondents considering the role of the CAP “very important” for stimulating jobs and growth and for supporting the role of the farmer in the food chain. Other responses highlight the importance for the future that the general public puts on agriculture and rural areas (>90%) and confirm the trend from previous surveys which shows increasing concern for agriculture and rural areas as well as improved awareness of the CAP.

Last week, D.C. gov unveiled a new Draft Open Data Policy. In the interest of openness, the proposed Mayoral order was debuted on a revamped Drafts.dc.gov site where anyone can go read and comment on it. And according to D.C. Director of Technology Innovation Matt Bailey, conversation and debate is going strong: Some, however, took stock of their opinions elsewhere. Joshua Tauberer, creator of GovTrack and steadfast open gov advocate, took to Medium to give a rundown on the proposed legislation. SPARC’s three initiatives are open access, open education and open data, Allen said. For example, when researchers have grants, they write about their data or results in scholarly articles. These articles are often published in journals that allow closed access only to the people who buy their products, Allen said. “There’s typically a one-year hiatus before being made public,” Allen said. “The other side is related to that research.” Open education can be connected to the cost of textbooks, she said.
