SPARC’s three initiatives are open access, open education and open data, Allen said. For example, when researchers have grants, they write about their data or results in scholarly articles. These articles are often published in journals that allow closed access only to the people who buy their products, Allen said. “There’s typically a one-year hiatus before being made public,” Allen said. “The other side is related to that research.” Open education can be connected to the cost of textbooks, she said.
