When the California Health Care Foundation launched the California Health Data Project last spring, it made a smart decision to create a new role in the civic innovation space. The foundation brought on California Health Data Ambassadors to connect the supply side of the open data equation, in this case the California Health and Human Services Agency’s (CHHSA’s) open data portal — to the demand side of the equation — or potential users of that portal. As two of these Health Data Ambassadors, we focus primarily on creating and nourishing feedback loops between the data owners and users, with the goal of making the state’s data as useful as possible.

Seattle Mayor Ed Murray today signed an executive order that instructs city departments to make their data more accessible to the public. The new open data policy was developed by city IT staff with help from the University of Washington and the Sunlight Foundation to help make data about everything from homelessness to local parks more easily available online. “As a city, we view open data as more than just a window into the city operations — we view it as a valuable tool,” Murray said today at Impact HUB. The mayor noted that the city “doesn’t have capacity to solve all problems,” and he hopes that entrepreneurs and engineers will utilize the data to help government come up with solutions to improve the quality of life for Seattleites.

A few days ago WNYC displayed the graphic fruits of a data request for all the filming permits issued in New York from November 2011 to July 2015. It used the info to produce a nifty interactive heat map that shows how often different areas were permitted for filming– no surprise that North Brooklyn and the LES/EV areas are painted the full deep maroon of 52+ permits in that period.

SEATTLE — After more than five years of dating, Seattle and open data finally tied the knot. Mayor Ed Murray signed an executive order before a crowd of reporters, city employees and constructive-minded coders at co-working space Impact Hub Seattle on Feb. 26 that calls for new standards of governance and policy around open data across all city departments. The order requires that all Seattle data be “open by preference,” which means that after privacy and security have been accounted for, the city’s preference will be to publish all its data.

SALT LAKE CITY — USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), the University of Montana and other partners have used Google Earth Engine to build a new interactive online map tool that, for the first time, combines layers of data to better target invasive species that are damaging habitat and rangeland. The tool was built as part of USDA’s ongoing Sage Grouse Initiative (SGI) and presents geospatial data covering a 100 million acre landscape in eight western States.
