In front of a group of commercial real estate developers, Gov. Susana Martinez signed a bill she said will make the campaign finance system more accurate and transparent, and make it easier for the public to access the information. The measure (HB 105), co-sponsored by Rep. Jim Smith, R-Tijeras, and Sen. Daniel Ivey-Soto, D-Albuqerque, requires lobbyists to report each time they spend more than $100 to influence elected officials. It had the support of groups like Common Cause who said it represents an incremental improvement to the disclosure of money in politics.

We created the Open Contracting Data Standard as a global, non-proprietary data standard – describing how to publish the information that users need. The data standard was designed and developed through an open process. It is focused on connecting up the data and documents that governments hold or can collect, with the needs of users who want to help fix problems, analyse public contracting, and innovate in the way contracts are made and delivered.

It’s a battle set to define the parameters of financial services competition in Australia’s new “agile”, “innovative” economy: control of digital customer transaction account data.  The adversaries are the banking oligopoly and disruptive fintech start-ups. Their positions are ideologically opposed.  Banks believe deeply that they own the data on their customers’ transactions. Holding the digital records of when and where and how much and on what money is spent will further entrench incumbents’ competitive advantage, given that data’s usefulness is set to grow as the big-data economy emerges. Data is becoming a prized resource.

Chicago’s open data community have already created tools to curate what the city makes public. OpenGrid is an effort by the city to collect that data and make it more accessible. Whet Moser writes, “It’s an interface for the city’s open data that allows users to run their searches off a map, creating their own geographies as they go and mashing up data as they wish.” Prior to OpenGrid, the city used a similar tool called WindyGrid to help plan events, services, and public safety. “With backing from Bloomberg Philanthropies and hosting by the Smart Chicago Collaborative, the city built a public version—OpenGrid—atop Plenar.io, an open-source infrastructure for open data.

The open source model of universal access and collaborative intelligence has extended from Web development to global development. NGO leaders can maximize the impact of their organizations either by taking their models to scale or opening the books on their projects and programs and allowing peer organizations to take them and run with them. Whether proprietary information belongs in the business of fighting poverty is open to debate. On one hand, intellectual property can drive competition and innovation, but on the other hand, collaborative models can lead to greater success stories. The U.S.-based international NGO Pact has spearheaded a new effort — Locus — to address the knowledge gap around which interventions work best to tackle increasingly complex global development challenges.

Following the successful DOI Event Tracker pilot in Spring 2014, development has been underway to build our new service, newly re-named Crossref Event Data. It’s an open data service that registers online activity (specifically, events) associated with Crossref metadata. Event Data will collect and store a record of any activity surrounding a research work from a defined set of web sources. The data will be made available as part of our metadata search service or via our Metadata API and normalised across a diverse set of sources. Data will be open, audit-able and replicable.
