In a speech today the UK’s Transport Minister Andrew Jones confirmed the British government’s commitment to making the use of public transport more amenable to those suffering with mental health issues, including a mandate to bus operators to make information about their routes, fares and times openly available, so that app makers can hook into the data and obviate the need for affected passengers to negotiate difficult interactions in stressful circumstances. The innovation is part of the Buses Bill, announced on 11th February, which is also likely to see the model of London’s Oyster card system rolled out to the rest of the UK.

It is a one-stop place for the alternative biomedical research and development landscape. The student-driven project, funded by Open Society Foundations, is a qualitative review of the alternative R&D initiatives around the world, in time for the United Nations High Level Panel on Access to Medicines dialogue next month. In the backdrop of high prices of drugs, widespread antimicrobial resistance, the continuing challenge around neglected diseases, the challenge of Ebola and now, Zika – this report assumes significance.

The City of Calgary is gearing up to host its second annual programming Hackathon event from March 4 to 6. This year, participants will have access to data from the City of Airdrie and other members of the Calgary Regional Partnership (CRP). The Hackathon is a three-day event that brings amateur programmers and entrepreneurs together to work in teams developing a new app, website or mapping device based on open source data. The new products are judged based on a number of criteria, including the ability to meet a need in the community. “This is the first time we’ve done a regional Hackathon. We’re just trying to use the experience the City of Calgary had in doing its first Hackathon last year,” said Corey Halford, Data Services team leader at the City of Airdrie.

City film permitting data will soon be available on the open data portal, a spokeswoman for the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment said Thursday. Associate commissioner Connie Ress’ statement came a day after WNYC published an article and map of TV shoots across the city from November 2011 to July 2015 using data from the administration in response to a FOIL request. WNYC also published the underlying data to the programming platform Github, including data for feature film and news show permits. Their article prompted transparency advocacy group Reinvent Albany to call on the city to publish that data to the portal immediately. “The fact that the film shoot data was released by WNYC instead of MOME is embarrassing,” Reinvent Albany said in a blog post.

Following positive leads from Wall Street, the Australian share market looks set to open higher this morning. Wall Street gained on Thursday on the back of higher oil prices, which seemed to allay fears that the banks could be hit by debt defaults. We also saw investors step in and pick up some bargains after a roller-coaster few weeks on US markets.  US economic news According to latest figures from the Commerce Department, new orders for durable US goods have experienced their highest increase in 10 months, jumping 4.9 per cent. This is compared to a decline of 4.6 per cent in December. The read beat economists’ expectations; those polled by Reuters expected only a 2.5 per cent increase.  Wall Street closed higher yesterday: The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 1.

Government through the Right to Access Information Commission (RAIC) with support from the World Bank will host the first open data festival, which will be the first in West Africa. Briefing both the electronic and print media at the Ministry of Information and Communication conference room, the Chairman for RAIC, Unisa Sesay stated that the commission was established with a clear mandate to make information available to the masses, and sees its role in increasing the supply of open aid data by making it readily available to the extent possible. Also, to improve how data is accessed, he said the RAIC is doing everything possible to make it more accessible and to make them aware of what rights they have in gaining such access, addressing the demand side of the commission’s role.
