Washington D.C. – NAPSG is pleased to inform our members that the US Department of Homeland Security’s Geospatial Management Office (GMO) announced that it is making important infrastructure data more accessible and in highly usable open data formats to the public safety community. The announcement was made on February 24, 2016, at the Esri Federal GIS Conference. At the Conference, Mr. David Alexander, Director of the GMO, made public the launch of HIFLD Open – which takes what was formerly known as HSIP Freedom (distributed via DVD) and creates a single point of entry to both view and download these 274 data sets, using Esri’s ArcGIS Online. HIFILD Open is accessible to the public here: https://hifld-dhs-gii.opendata.arcgis.

News: Company says it is not directly competing with Apple and Google. Mozilla has unveiled four IoT projects to further its IoT connected devices development project that will see Firefox OS for smartphones converted into an IoT OS. The company has called on developers and volunteers to help ensure that “each project has the best opportunity at making an impact”. Mozilla’s first round of IoT plans includes Project Link, a personal user agent that works to understand consumer’s preferences for how they want to interact with the world of devices in the home, and automate the connected world. Formerly known as Foxlink, the project is an experiment to build a software building block that can interact with various devices.

California lawmakers this week called for more transparency in state government, noting the federal government, local entities and other states have implemented open data initiatives that provide detailed accountability of how public money is spent. “I feel like government is just so opaque and so complicated,” Assemblymember Ling Ling Chang, R-Diamond Bar, told an audience at Open Data Day held Tuesday in Sacramento. “There’s so many layers of bureaucracy to get the right information,” Chang added. Chang expressed her own frustration with the lack of information available about how money is spent by California’s state agencies and departments.

For cultural, technical, and financial reasons, field sciences such as geology, ecology, and archaeology have lagged behind many of the laboratory sciences in making research data and samples available to the broader research community – but it is time for this to change, Marcia McNutt, Brian Nosek and colleagues emphasize in this Policy Forum. They note that data sharing is key for transparency and reproducibility. While they acknowledge that objects of study can often be fleeting, exceptionally rare, or forever changing in field sciences, there are numerous ways to better collect and share this data, they say. Some governments and journals have adopted a top-down approach, for example by requiring that data and samples be deposited upon publication.

In January, the World Economic Forum meeting in Davos, Switzerland saw members of the global elite extolling the virtues of the so-called “4th industrial revolution”. The catch-all term, also known as “Industry 4.0,” ties together a wide range of cutting-edge digital technologies – such as 3-D printing, machine intelligence, the internet of things, cloud computing, and big data – into a vision of a future world of work. In this brave new world, smart factories will operate by automation with machines exchanging data seamlessly. The consequences for the work force in both developing and developed countries will be huge.

As demand grows for more sustainable and equitable urban planning, Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) initiatives have been gaining steam worldwide.  From Washington to Hong Kong to Chicago, many cities have developed TOD policies that aim to increase public transit use, enhance resident access to jobs, and reduce carbon emissions that arise from automobile dependency. Yet in many places, the path to enacting effective TOD policies comes with obstacles. These can range from restrictive zoning laws to wary residents and hesitant elected officials.  If TOD advocates wish to sway local policy or opinion, then sharing information and guiding public discourse becomes critical.
