Little Rock Mayor Mark Stodola says the city is making progress in reducing crime, improving its economy, providing information to citizens and reaching out to underserved communities. The mayor delivered his annual state of the city address Thursday before a group of city officials, activists and community members. You can read a full transcript of the address here. You can also listen to it at the bottom of this page. Stodola noted that Little Rock has a 4.3 percent unemployment rate, lower than the rate for the state of Arkansas. He praised the revamped Main Street Corridor in downtown, which he said has drawn $100 million in private investment and $2 million in public investment.

Montgomery is experiencing a “free the data” movement, and that movement is starting with the bus system. Two months ago, the Montgomery Area Transit System – also known as MATS or “the M” – partnered with transit-tracking app TransLoc to provide the city with the bus-tracking app it had been sorely missing. While in use, the app collects data about both riders and buses that helps answer interesting questions: What stops receive the most riders? What routes could be improved? In an effort to improve transit systems on a local, individual level, TransLoc has opened its data for public use. Specifically, the application program interface (API) allows users to incorporate the real-time transit tracking information into apps.

The city of Nashville is hiring its first ever “chief data officer” — a person described in a new job posting as an “evangelist for data.” This new city staffer will be tasked with updating Metro’s “open data” project, in which government information is supposed to be shared among departments — and with the public. The officer would also help city leaders to use more data analysis when making decisions. A long list of duties includes promoting privacy and tech security for the city. Metro’s current head of information technology, Keith Durbin, says the new position will make government more efficient and responsible to citizens. The position was also part of a Metro proposal in the nationwide “Smart City Challenge.

The region has launched a new pilot project that will make information more accessible online. Durham Region’s Open Data site, which was launched in accordance with the province’s open data directive, will provide raw information on various aspects of how the region operates. As part of the pilot project, the website features information on transit, as well as mapping systems. The data provided, however, will likely not be of use to many people. “The average person probably won’t use the data,” Don Beaton, the region’s chief information officer, told councillors during a meeting of regional council. “People can take (the data) and use it in statistics, do analysis or use it in building an application.

Schneider Electric has announced new solutions and resources designed to make Open Compute more attainable for data center managers. The new portfolio from the energy management and automation specialist includes an Open Rack V2, available pre-assembled or as a flat pack for ease of stocking and shipping, as well as concept designs for a high density, high efficiency power supply unit and battery backup unit. Schneider Electric says the new resources provide customers with an end-to-end Open Compute data center architecture, including physical and IT infrastructure, enabling them to better visualise large-scale design.

Officials at the Costa Rica-based Central American Association for Aeronautics and Space (ACAE) on Monday announced they will launch a crowdfunding campaign to raise $75,000 needed to orbit the first Costa Rica satellite, a small device called picosatellite. The 10-centimeter (4-inch) picosatellite is a key element of ACAE’s Irazú Project and is expected to be deployed into space from the International Space Station (ISS) during the second half of 2017. The project takes its name from Costa Rica’s highest volcano, located in Cartago province. Project director Marco Gómez said the research consists of real-time measurements of temperature, humidity and carbon dioxide fixation.

MILAN, March 16 Italy’s Grandi Stazioni said on Wednesday seven potential bidders would start looking in detail at the railway retailer’s financial data in coming days as the group’s privatisation process advances. Grandi Stazioni said its shareholders Italian railways Ferrovie dello Stato and Eurostazioni had selected a short-list of possible buyers which included private equity firms Lone Star, BC Partners, Terra Firma, as well as Deutsche Asset Management together with ATP and Poste Vita. Grandi Stazioni reported a 10 percent rise in 2015 revenues to 231 million euros. Net profit rose 16 percent last year to 23 million euros, it said.

Connected Open Heritage (Kopplat Öppet Kulturarv, KÖK in Swedish) is a project by Wikimedia Sweden. It aims to update and make our cultural heritage data more available on Wikimedia projects. When Pacific Northwest National Laboratory CIO Brian Abrahamson asked his IT staff to put more emphasis on customer experience, the team that handles monitoring and automation turned the spotlight on PNNL data. “We had the insight that we could use the data that we have to understand what our customers were experiencing,” said Daryl Anderson, chief infrastructure architect at the lab. The IT team’s primary objectives, he said, were to “understand how our operations are impacting our customers and what can we do to proactively make their experience better.” But that was difficult to do because of the glut of available information — about 400 gigabytes of data from 30 to 40 sources and about 13,000 devices.
