You also created the government’s largest crowd-sourcing platform, mygov.in. Why was that done?This was a directive directly from the Prime Minister. He felt there should be a government platform where people could engage, give him suggestions, actively participate in formulating plans. And it is really picking up very well, much more than what we anticipated two years back. This Week in Civic Tech presents a line-up of notable events in the space that connects citizens to government services. Topics cover latest startups, hackathons, open data initiatives and other influencers. Check back each week for updates. Data advocates and health-care officials converged in downtown Sacramento, Calif., this week to discuss the latest open data initiatives and public health projects at the third annual Health and Human Services Open Datafest. The two-day event, held March 16-17, was led by the social impact organization Stewards of Change. It highlighted, among other announcements, updates on the nation’s progress to put agency expenditures online through the Digital Accountability and Transparency Act (DATA Act).

Google’s going to wield its mastery of big data to power the city of the future—just as soon as the federal government chooses one. The Department of Transportation announced it is working with Sidewalk Labs, Google’s smart-cities research unit, under its Smart City Challenge. The contest invites medium-sized cities to create comprehensive plans outlining how they’d use things like automated vehicles, on-demand services, and open data. The best idea wins $50 million to begin implementing it. Seven cities have made the final round: Austin, Texas; Columbus, Ohio; Denver; Pittsburgh; Portland, Oregon; San Francisco; and Kansas City, Missouri. The DOT is giving each city $100,000 and three months to flesh out its proposal.

Why you should consider going to DemHack2016 even if you don’t know how to code  | Generocity Open data is no good if no one understands it. That’s what the city’s Board of Ethics learned after releasing campaign finance data for last year’s politics-oriented DemHack hackathon. Barely anyone used it because it was difficult to understand (see a list of the DemHack projects from last year here). Some campaign finance reports appeared to be entered twice or three times, a quirk due to campaign finance reporting rules. Not to mention that campaign contribution limits and reporting deadlines can change year to year. Shane Creamer, executive director of the Board of Ethics, feels hackers’ pain: “I felt the same way when I first got into this 10 years ago,” he said.

CDO is the preferred option, according to panel of experts appointed by the Mayor to advise on technology The next Mayor of London should appoint an IT leader in a bid for the city to make better use of data and technology, according to a Greater London Authority (GLA) report dubbed the Future of Smart. It says the next mayor should “examine options for enhancing city leadership in data technology”. This could take the form of any, or all of the following: a chief technology officer (CTO), a chief information officer (CIO) or a chief digital officer (CDO). The CDO role is the option recommended by the Smart London Board, a panel of experts appointed by the Mayor to advise on IT.

Among cities with open data policies, Chicago routinely ranks near the top. EveryBlock, arguably the first, neighborhood-level, public data tool for residents, launched in Chicago in 2007. When Philadelphia appointed its first chief data officer in 2012, Chicago was the only other city with such a position. The Windy City’s open data portal, the clearinghouse for municipal information on crime, public employee salaries and more, includes about 600 different sets of data. But open data is more often than not the domain of data scientists, civic hackers and public policy officials.

Whenever they wanted to play outside, the kids who lived between Highway 41 and the Cargill meat processing plant in Fresno gathered at a vacant overgrown lot on Almy Street. Today that desolate lot has been transformed into a lively community playground and park — a new anchor in the neighborhood known as the 41 and North Corridor — because of community organizers who imagined new ways to use data and stories to make their case to local officials. The community was accustomed to being disappointed by Fresno’s leaders. Local organizers there knew the city was reluctant to add new parks because of concerns about maintenance costs. But public officials changed their minds in part because of important facts that sprang from the imaginations of the kids — not from county departments.

Code for SA established in 2013 recently launched the much talked about Tax Clock. Its purpose you may ask? To help you understand where your taxes are spent. The NGO is involved in many works such as: working with the Department of Water and Sanitation who have launched a campaign to address water and sanitation issues in SA with a challenge to the public to submit a short video of their innovative water solution. They have also launched Africa’s first data journalism and are in the process of working with the first cohort of journalists in our data journalism newsroom.
