The Open Data Delaware group is planning a hackathon for the National Day of Civic Hacking on June 4, and they’re seeking a logo design for the event. Group members will be calling the hackathon “DataWorks,” with a theme of making it easier to do or start business in Delaware. If you’ve got a stellar idea for a design, you can submit it (and any questions) to opendatade@gmail.com. The deadline for submissions is March 21. During last year’s National Day of Civic Hacking, thousands of people across the country put together coding projects — involving open data, tech and design — to improve their communities.

San Jose, Calif., joined a growing list of US cities implementing a Vision Zero initiative, which aims to reduce traffic fatalities to zero through education, enforcement and engineering. During the same year, there were 60 traffic-related fatalities in San Jose, the highest annual total in more than 20 years. With a population of 1 million people, projected to grow nearly 50 percent by 2040, and an already-overburdened transportation network (indeed, San Jose and the greater Bay Area region are frequently cited as having some of the worst traffic congestion in the country), the city faces significant public policy, planning, and service delivery challenges in this endeavor.

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) presented results from its 2015 Population Based Survey during a data dissemination event in Accra, Ghana, on March 17, 2016. The survey, which is a follow-up to a survey conducted in 2012, tracks poverty and nutrition data for more than 7,000 households in 59 districts of northern Ghana. It was conducted in collaboration with the Ghana Statistical Service, the University Of Cape Coast, and the Department of Agricultural Economics at Kansas State University in the United States. The results are being used to monitor the impact of the U.S. government’s Feed the Future Initiative in Ghana. Feed the Future works around the world to abolish extreme poverty, undernutrition and hunger.

Chancellor George Osborne has pledged money to build an open address register. Sound familiar? That’s because it was sold off with the Royal Mail. Now we’re spending £5 million to get it back. Amid all the budget announcements yesterday, one pledge seems to have so far been overlooked in the press. Chancellor George Osborne promised to spend £5 million to build an open address register. It’s exactly as it sounds: an open, freely available database with all 29 million UK postal addresses and 1.8 million postcodes. That database is also something that the government actually used to own until three years ago, when it was sold off as part of the Royal Mail privatisation. We’re now spending £5 million to get it back.

The Cambridgeshire Research Group has created several interactive atlases combining local and national open data with a range of InstantAtlas data visualisation analysis tools. It has been working to establish a local data portal called Cambridgeshire Insight Open Data as the single place to get local information. Organisations are now sharing data in order to change the way people live and work in the county, as well as meeting the requirements for an open government. Using the latest developments in InstantAtlas visualisation tools Cambridgeshire Research Group is using Cambridgeshire Insight to meet the open government aspirations. We spoke to Hendrik Grothuis, Research Manager-Innovation, Cambridgeshire Research Group, Cambridgeshire County Council about the project.

One of the Big Data movements with the most momentum is Open Data — making this information available to the public. But what good does this actually do? Apolitical spoke to three pioneers in the field in Burkina Faso, Brazil and India, who told us about fighting corruption, ensuring free elections and preventing crime. These real, substantive issues go beyond the inevitably vague buzzwords of transparency and accountability. Here we discover what Open Data can really do about them. One of the stars of the Open Data movement, Malick Tapsoba helped Burkina Faso to its first fully democratic elections since independence.

In 2014, the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) issued open access policies to make their research openly available. These policies are producing results, and open access and open data are steadily growing in China. In May 2015, the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NFSC) launched an open access (OA) repository to support implementation of the NFSC policy statement on open access to research publications of its funded projects. Today, less than a year after its launch, the Open Repository of the NSFC includes 135,000 research articles published between 1998 and 2015 by 274,634 authors from 1,305 institutions. These research papers have already been downloaded over 669,001 times.
