As part of Ontario’s commitment to Open Government, the province is launching new tools that will give more Ontarians a voice in government decision-making. Ontario’s new online Public Consultations Directory provides one window access for Ontarians to find information about and participate in consultations. The directory will also provide information and results from past public consultations. To help engage the public in more meaningful ways, solve problems and create effective solutions, Ontario has also developed a Public Engagement Framework. This tool, unique to Ontario, lays out different approaches to public engagement and will help to increase the quality of public engagement, leading to better policy, programs and services.

Ontario’s Open Government strategy and action plan is focused on advancing openness and transparency through three key streams – Open Dialogue, Open Information and Open Data. Through Open Dialogue, Ontario is providing the public more opportunities to weigh-in on government decision-making, to help improve government programs, policies and services, and to engage more voices and gather public input as policies are being developed. Ontario’s Public Engagement Framework is a new made-in-Ontario policy tool for the government to engage a broader, more diverse range of Ontarians in a meaningful way on key issues. The development process started with a draft framework based on international standards and best practices and modified it to meet the needs of Ontario.

Air pollution is one of most acute health problems of our times. Although invisible, small particles — 2.5 microns in diameter — are today understood to be the fourth highest risk factor for death globally.  A deadly cause of respiratory disease all over the world, it is estimated to cause 2.9 million deaths per year, 64% of those in Asia, where rapid development has led to increased exposure to particulate matter air pollution. But getting accurate local information about air quality in many places is difficult if not impossible, and even where it is provided by governments or researchers, the data tends to be ambient rather than location specific.

When the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) made a historic public release of tax data last year, it triggered a series of headlines and comments. One newspaper ran the headline: Nearly 600 companies paid no tax in Australia last year. Another produced a calculator allowing online readers to calculate whether they paid more tax than Australia’s biggest companies But headlines rarely tell the full story. For example, if a company doesn’t make a profit, it doesn’t pay tax. The Australian experience is a timely case study of the power of tax information – and of partial information. In response to public concerns about corporate tax avoidance, more jurisdictions are pushing for the public release of tax data.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has boiled down its public health campaign against influenza to a single slogan: “Take 3.” Vaccines, everyday preventive actions like handwashing, and influenza antivirals. Last year, because of a mismatch between the vaccine and circulating virus, the message was reduced to—essentially—“Take 1,” as the CDC emphatically promoted oseltamivir (Tamiflu) for treating disease. The agency has stated: “Antiviral flu medicines are underutilized. If you get them early, they could keep you out of the hospital and might even save your life.” The CDC is one of the nation’s most powerful voices when it comes to public health recommendations. That’s why it’s so important that its advice be scientifically sound and independently derived.

Hackers in recent weeks have stepped up their efforts to steal employee tax information from companies in all kinds of industries. Typically, the information contained on IRS form W-2 is used to file false tax returns or steal someone’s identity. The situation has become so bad that the IRS earlier this month issued an alert to human resources and payroll professionals about the subject: Beware of an emerging phishing email scheme that purports to be from company executives and requests personal information on employees. “This is a new twist on an old scheme using the cover of the tax season and W-2 filings to try tricking people into sharing personal data,” IRS Commissioner John Koskinen said. “Now the criminals are focusing their schemes on company payroll departments,” he continued.

Local problems need local solutions, and the youth in our area are primed to make a real difference in our region.  To increase youth involvement, iHub Niagara and 6 Social (a new endeavour from the Royal Conservatory‘s Learning Through the Arts programme) organized an event in Niagara on March 5, targeting groups of young people with talents in science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM) Over a 12-hour day of activities, 6Social led over 40 students aged 12 – 29 through an ideation and business planning workshop.  The ideas and plans that emerged were stellar, with direct benefit to the Niagara region — and specifically aimed at solving social issues and fostering community involvement from local youth.
