Tax authorities have filed more than 600 cases against alleged tax evaders and smugglers but only a handful have been convicted as most of the cases languished in courts. In a speech at the High-Level Dialogue on Fiscal Transparency hosted by the Open Society Foundation in the US last week, Finance Secretary Cesar V. Purisima said the Aquino administration has been applying a “public value chain approach” to its revenue reform programs. “We estimate that every year, the Philippines loses P200 billion from smuggling and P400 billion from tax evasion. Our approach is a bias toward regular execution: We manage our bureaucracy like clockwork through weekly or monthly deliverables.

Data is the latest currency and it’s how you can be targeted by businesses who know exactly who you are and exactly what you like to buy. And now a new service has been launched this week to make it even easier for Kiwi companies to find out about you. But it isn’t as scary as what it sounds.  In fact, Figure.NZ chief executive Lillian Grace says a general misunderstanding around the word data and what it means has created paranoia among the public. “Most people still think that data is something that people buy to top up their phones? So all the experts are talking about big data and open data and the public don’t actually understand what that means.” Ms Grace says the type of data that Figure.NZ compiles is to aid average kiwis understand the world around them better.

City of Edinburgh Council has thrown its weight behind the take-up of a handful of mobile apps aimed at promoting health and wellbeing, following their emergence as finalists in its annual EdinburghApps challenge. While Edinburgh has not declared an overall winner, it has highlighted four projects that were pitched at a recent event. Among them is agameofwalks, developed with Sustrans, a charity that encourages people to travel by foot, bike or public transport. It uses gamification to encourage children to walk to school, guiding them along safe routes while prompting them to play games based on what they see around them.

The New South Wales government will begin trials next year to allow commuters to pay for public transport by tapping on and off with their credit and debit cards, as an alternative to using their Opal card. A Transport of NSW spokesperson told ZDNet that giving commuters the choice to pay using their Opal card, or a credit or debit card when travelling would offer them another easy-to-use and convenient option for travelling. “Contactless payments are a major advance in ticketing technology. Customers get another option for paying fares whether they are regular commuters or visitors to Sydney,” the spokesperson said.

The Productivity Commission has released an issues paper to help guide public input for its inquiry into the availability and use of public and private data by individuals and organisations. The government last month announced it had commissioned a PC inquiry to look ways to boost the use of public and private sector data, as well as individuals’ control of their own data. The inquiry was announced by Treasurer Scott Morrisonas part of the government’s fintech action plan. “Effective use of data is increasingly integral to the efficient functioning of the economy. Improved availability of data, combined with the tools to exploit it, is creating new economic opportunities,” read the government’s fintech statement.

Leadspace has announced the launch of its Virtual Data Management Platform. The platform is aimed at B2B marketing teams who are looking to improve their lead generation with the company claiming users can gain up to a 40% boost in conversations.
