After a few years of stagnation, I feel like open data in Edmonton is exciting again. This has been a great year for open data and open government in our city! Here’s an update on what’s been happening. International Open Data Day really kicked things off back in February with a hackathon hosted by EPL at the new Makerspace. It was a great opportunity for developers to come together to take a fresh look at the municipal, provincial, and federal data catalogues, all of which have grown considerably in the last year or so. In May, a group of interested citizens organized a hackathon called HackYEG. Mayor Iveson spoke at the event which was a great success and led to a number of really interesting projects. The event also led to a new citizen meetup, called Open Edmonton.

The UN Climate Summit 2014 has naturally put the issue of climate change and global warming firmly at the top of the agenda, where they belong. This, in its turn, has been rather awkward for the oil and gas companies that are responsible for creating much of the problem – and which are still lobbying hard against the necessary measures to address it. But clearly, they need to be seen to be doing something to back the Summit’s aims, hence the following announcement [.pdf], made there yesterday: Multinational oil and gas companies have joined forces with governments and international environmental organizations to cut the emissions of methane, a potent greenhouse gas produced by the oil and gas industry, as part of the Oil & Gas Methane Partnership.

Once you fall down the genealogical rabbit hole, it’s hard to find your way back out. My journey began with my grandfather, a polio survivor confined to a wheelchair who took to computers in his later years. One of his passions was researching his ancestors, and the tool he used to collect his findings was Brøderbund’s Family Tree Maker. I was fascinated by the charts and tables that he’d print out on his bubble jet printer, but I didn’t have the patience for all the data entry. Fast forward twenty years and we have software and social networks built around genealogical data. The ease of sharing data with one another means that it’s very likely that someone else has already found what you’re looking for. We’re all related, after all.

Traditional AM/FM radio and online music services like Pandora and Spotify are increasingly battling over the same listening time and space. Radio listening is happening more and more frequently via streaming services so that listening on the laptop, desktop or smartphone is becoming a more contested space. At the same time online music services are increasingly moving into the prime area of radio dominance: the morning and afternoon commute. Smartphones are more frequently connected to car radios, and internet-connected in-dash receivers are being sold in an ever greater number of automobiles. Lest the revenue implications are not obvious, Pandora is now hiring traditional radio sales executives in major US markets to draw advertising dollars away from radio.

Government open data initiatives have made patient health information more readily available online through healthdata.gov and third-party sites that pull from public sources. But coherent legal and ethics policies are lagging data innovation, says a paper recently published in the Berkeley Technology Law Journal. The author, Sharona Hoffman, a professor at Case Western Reserve University School of Law, writes that public medical data benefits are perhaps better understood than how such data could be used to violate people’s privacy, discriminate against them, make erroneous research conclusions, or for litigation. If regulators are to respond to these concerns, they must consider a variety of stakeholders as well as strike a balance, says Hoffman.

What should utilities do with their customer data? Customer data is key to unlocking innovation, but regulators must parse through privacy issues first. In Illinois, about 90,000 people work in the clean energy sector — many at tiny firms with six people or less, developing technological innovations that aim to save customers money and ease the strain on the power grid. But they need one thing: data. “We think there’s a lot of very interesting development in the clean tech space and one way or another a lot of those applications need data,” Dave Kolata, director of the Citizens Utility Board (CUB), an Illinois utility watchdog and ratepayer advocate, told Utility Dive. Across the country, data-intensive smart grids are growing.

Chicago, in terms of both the city itself and its tech community, is collectively a pioneer in open data. Going back almost 20 years to Citizen ICAM, the city’s long been on the forefront of collecting data about itself and offering it up to the public to parse. The city’s Data Portal is a great example—immense amounts of data freely available in useful forms. But it still has its limitations. Chicago’s a city of neighborhoods, but the data about itself usually comes sliced by community area, ward, police beat, and so forth. Much of it is geolocated, but pulling out that data to reflect the city as it’s lived by its residents, instead of as divided by sociologists many decades ago, is time-consuming.
