Three years ago, President Obama joined with the leaders of seven other nations to launch the Open Government Partnership (OGP), an international partnership between governments and civil society to promote transparency, fight corruption, energize civic engagement, and leverage new technologies to open up governments worldwide.  The United States and other founding countries pledged to transform the way that governments serve their citizens in the 21st century.  Today, as heads of state of OGP participating countries gather at the UN General Assembly, this partnership has grown from 8 to 65 nations and hundreds of civil society organizations around the world.

The third and final round of submitting ideas started on Friday, the 19th of September 2014. The application period for ideas is open until Monday the 6th of October 2014. The final micro funding decisions will be revealed no later than on the 17th of October 2014. Participants can register their ideas at http://www.datademo.fi. Participation in the Datademo event is open to everyone with ideas for utilising open data as long as the end results promote democracy. It is also possible to participate in English; the ideas and end results should be in Finnish or English. Ideas for the HRI-category must focus on utilising open data from Helsinki or the Helsinki region, which can be found from the HRI service.

エドモントンで開いているデータはエキサイティングなような気が停滞の数年後再び。これはオープン データと私たちの街で開かれた政府のための素晴らしい 1 年されている ！ここで何が起こっている更新です。国際オープン データ日新しい Makerspace で EPL 主催 hackathon との後ろから物事を 2 月本当に蹴った。一緒にすべての最後の 1 年かそこらで大幅に成長している地方自治体、州および連邦政府のデータ カタログで新鮮な表情を取りに来て開発者のための絶好の機会だった。5 月、興味のある市民のグループは HackYEG と呼ばれる hackathon を開催しました。市長 Iveson は大成功だったし、本当に面白いプロジェクトの数につながっているイベントで話を聞いた。イベントはまた開いているエドモントンと呼ばれる、新しい市民ミートにつながった。

After a few years of stagnation, I feel like open data in Edmonton is exciting again. This has been a great year for open data and open government in our city! Here’s an update on what’s been happening. International Open Data Day really kicked things off back in February with a hackathon hosted by EPL at the new Makerspace. It was a great opportunity for developers to come together to take a fresh look at the municipal, provincial, and federal data catalogues, all of which have grown considerably in the last year or so. In May, a group of interested citizens organized a hackathon called HackYEG. Mayor Iveson spoke at the event which was a great success and led to a number of really interesting projects. The event also led to a new citizen meetup, called Open Edmonton.

The UN Climate Summit 2014 has naturally put the issue of climate change and global warming firmly at the top of the agenda, where they belong. This, in its turn, has been rather awkward for the oil and gas companies that are responsible for creating much of the problem – and which are still lobbying hard against the necessary measures to address it. But clearly, they need to be seen to be doing something to back the Summit’s aims, hence the following announcement [.pdf], made there yesterday: Multinational oil and gas companies have joined forces with governments and international environmental organizations to cut the emissions of methane, a potent greenhouse gas produced by the oil and gas industry, as part of the Oil & Gas Methane Partnership.

Once you fall down the genealogical rabbit hole, it’s hard to find your way back out. My journey began with my grandfather, a polio survivor confined to a wheelchair who took to computers in his later years. One of his passions was researching his ancestors, and the tool he used to collect his findings was Brøderbund’s Family Tree Maker. I was fascinated by the charts and tables that he’d print out on his bubble jet printer, but I didn’t have the patience for all the data entry. Fast forward twenty years and we have software and social networks built around genealogical data. The ease of sharing data with one another means that it’s very likely that someone else has already found what you’re looking for. We’re all related, after all.

Cloud standards group ODCA pushes TOSCA standard for workload mobility across cloud service providers. Where is Amazon? The Open Data Center Alliance, a user-driven group, renewed its pledge to help members move into cloud computing at its Forecast 2014 meeting in San Francisco Tuesday. And it attempted to marshal more support for an emerging standard — TOSCA — that would make applications portable across cloud services. The Oasis standards body issued its 1.0 version of TOSCA last fall. The Topology and Orchestration Specification for Cloud Applications is a mouthful, but alliance members understand it to mean a set of semantics that can specify an application’s requirements, then presents those requirements to any cloud service.
