It’s a remarkable sight. Pay a visit to the city of Chicago’s data portal, open up the latest crime data map and you can see a year’s worth of crime information displayed geographically, down to the block. It’s an amazing example of what can be done with open data. In 2011, shortly after he was inaugurated, Mayor Rahm Emanuel released a treasure trove of city data for public consumption, some of it geo-based information, including up-to-date crime incident data, which used to be available in hard-to-access aggregated formats that came out just once a month. The city’s open data strategy has given civic hackers a substantial boost, helping put a spotlight on the possibilities of merging open data with law enforcement.

“As part of the City of Cape Town’s commitment to ensuring transparent, accountable and accessible government, council today approved the City’s Open Data Policy,” the city said in a statement. “In having done so, the City of Cape Town is embracing the use of open data to promote economic growth, development and inclusion.” The policy would allow residents to have access to economically relevant metro data which would help to drive personal agency, creativity and innovation. Mayoral committee member for corporate services Xanthea Limberg said the city generated a significant amount of data that was potentially useful to residents.

President Barack Obama Wednesday reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to the Open Government Partnership and announced several new open government initiatives in various agencies and departments during an event held at the United Nations. “We’re going to work more closely with the health care sector and state and local law enforcement not just to improve public health and safety but to better protect the privacy and personal information of the American people,” Obama said, announcing the expansion effort. Obama also announced enhanced transparency through upgrades to the USAspending.gov website, as well as expanded collaboration with the private sector and increased access to online education course in the U.S. for people around the world.

The General Services Administration has hired open-data advocate Rebecca Williams from the Sunlight Foundation to help it make the tens of thousands of government datasets on its Data.gov site more accessible. In a Sept. 23 blog post on GSA’s website, David Wycinsky Jr., communications manager in GSA’s Office of Communications and Marketing, said the agency has tapped Williams for her experience in working across state and local government and her most recent stint at “a leading nonprofit open-government advocacy organization.” Data.gov, launched in 2009 by then-federal CIO Vivek Kundra, contains almost 98,000 datasets from federal, state and local agencies, along with tools and resources to conduct research, build apps and design data visualizations.

If the 2014 Code for America Summit had one statement to make, it’s that tomorrow’s civic tech must solve problems — and everyone, not just government, is accountable. Earlier this year Houston, Texas launched the Performance Improvement Portal,a hub for all of the city’s performance and open data resources. Through the Performance Insight report and the Performance Improvement Portal, citizens are now able to see how the city measures its own performance, and participate in civic innovation projects. Now the city is moving forward with its open data work by passing an open data by default policy. Houston has had an open data portal for some time now. The portal houses a range of municipal data sets, but the new policy will codify what gets released and when for the first time. Under the new law, most of the city’s data will be public.

Philadelphia has invested in dozens of urban greening projects to prevent stormwater runoff. Now a team of mapmakers and data analysts is tracking those improvements to figure out if they influence public health. “There’s this idea out there, that green space is good for us, it’s healthy for us. It helps our mental health, it helps our physical health, our ability to concentrate, that it may bring our stress levels down, that it is a preventer of crime or our fear of crime. So we have this idea but it has largely been unproven,” said research scientist Michelle Kondo with the USDA Forest Service. While the city is working to upgrade its aging sewer system, there have also been dozens of “green” projects to help deal with flooding and polluted-water problems.

The third and final round of submitting ideas started on Friday, the 19th of September 2014. The application period for ideas is open until Monday the 6th of October 2014. The final micro funding decisions will be revealed no later than on the 17th of October 2014. Participants can register their ideas at http://www.datademo.fi. Participation in the Datademo event is open to everyone with ideas for utilising open data as long as the end results promote democracy. It is also possible to participate in English; the ideas and end results should be in Finnish or English. Ideas for the HRI-category must focus on utilising open data from Helsinki or the Helsinki region, which can be found from the HRI service.
