Shipping efficiency data should not be withheld by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) but made transparent so the industry can improve environmental performance, campaign groups have said. Transport & Environment, Seas at Risk and Richard Branson’s Carbon War Room argue that a lack of publicly available data on the energy performance of individual ships is one of the principal barriers to the sector reducing its emissions. The groups support initiatives to make efficiency performance publicly available and require ships to report and publicise their energy efficiency data, but warn some in the industry are trying to undermine these moves.

OTTAWA — The Conservatives’ new draft plan on open government makes no mention of reforming the Access to Information Act, despite widespread calls to revise the 32-year-old law. The draft plan would see the government make information and data — including scientific research, federal contract details and archival records — more readily available by default. But it proposes no legislative changes to the access law, which allows people who pay $5 to request government records ranging from correspondence and briefing notes to audits and hospitality receipts. The legislation was passed in 1982 and took effect on Canada Day the following year.

If you’ve been reading anything related to international development in the last year, you will have seen rich conversations around the the idea of a “data revolution”. What exactly would a data revolution look like? What would its aims be? Is it about data collection, use, analysis, all of the above, or something else entirely? To answer these and other questions, the United Nations Secretary General recently formed an Independent Expert Advisory Group (IEAG) on the “Data revolution for development”. I’m part of this group: we’ve been tasked with making recommendations on how to achieve a data revolution.

The SketchFactor app identifies neighborhoods’ “sketchiness” through publicly available data, as well as user updates that other users can vote on. The crowdsourcing aspect has led to controversy. SketchFactor is an app that combines public crime data with mobile user reports to rate the “sketchiness” of different neighborhoods on the East Coast of the US. The iOS version went live earlier this summer, and the Android version was released on October 9, 2014. As SketchFactor, LLC cofounder Allison McGuire related to me, in an interview, the idea for the app came from her own experience. “After living in Boston, London, Washington, DC, and now NY, I’ve developed a walking habit,” she explained. “There are many times when I wished I knew what was on the next block.

Data is central to our work for children – as many stories on this blog illustrate: Investments in data on children were bolstered a couple of decades ago by the World Summit for Children where world leaders committed to “establish appropriate mechanisms for the regular and timely collection, analysis and publication of data required to monitor relevant social indicators relating to the well-being of children”. And, later on, by the Millennium Development Goals. Advancements since then have been significant. In 1990, 29 low- and middle-income countries had trend data on child malnutrition. Today 107 do, largely thanks to data collected via increasingly sophisticated household surveys.
