University of Bedfordshire’s newest addition, University Campus Milton Keynes, is taking part in a revolutionary project between industry and higher education and bringing Big Data to the business community in Milton Keynes. MK;Smart is a £16m partner project that is led by the Open University and aims to secure economic growth in Milton Keynes by the use of ICT technology. At the heart of the project there will be a state of the art data acquisition and management infrastructure centre called the MK Data Hub which will be located at UCMK from December 1. The MK Data Hub will allow businesses to use and analyse Big Data to improve their services, discover new products and grow and expand.

The Los Angeles Fire Department will begin releasing verified response time data once a month on its website as firefighters begin having regular conversations about improving their performance using data, Mayor Eric Garcetti and Fire Chief Ralph Terrazas announced Thursday. The emergency response agency has been plagued by questions over the accuracy of its response time data, ever since department officials admitted in 2012 the data they had been releasing showed firefighters were responding faster than they actually were. Officials at the time blamed the inaccurate data on a faulty process for crunching the times recorded in their dispatch system. The Los Angeles Fire Department website, lafd.

The second e-book from the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas, “Digital Tools for Journalists,” by Argentinian journalist Sandra Crucianelli, is now available in Portuguese. The translation of the book is the result of a partnership between the Knight Center at the University of Texas at Austin and the Media Strengthening Program in Mozambique, financed by the United States government through its Agency for International Development (USAID), and implemented by IREX. Ben Kallos, one of the Council’s most active and outspoken members on issues involving data and technology, thinks that open-government advocates have a special opportunity at the moment. “When you have a new administration and a new mayor, [any revelation] from the data is somebody else’s dirty laundry,” he said. “Whatever you find, it’s somebody’s else problem, not the current mayor’s.” On Monday, the Council technology committee, under chair James Vacca, will hold an oversight hearing on New York City’s open data portal, with civic technology advocates expected to push for improvements to data quality and accessibility, which has also been a priority of Kallos.

The Responsive City: Engaging Communities Through Data-Smart Governance, by Stephen Goldsmith and Susan Crawford (Jossey-Bass, 208 pp., $35) From the healthcare.gov debacle to the Veterans Administration scandal to the bungled Ebola response, Americans have good reason to be pessimistic about the competence of government. But Harvard professor Steve Goldsmith, formerly both mayor of Indianapolis and deputy mayor of New York City, remains bullish about governments ability to improve services, at least at the state and local level. Mayor Annise Parker has instituted an open data policy to allow Houstonians better access to city information. The city said enterprise data officer Jackie Smith and an advisory board will work with city departments to catalog data sets and establish standards for the city’s open-data portal, which hosts government information. “First and foremost, this is about increasing transparency,” said Mayor Parker in a release. “It is also about citizen engagement and increasing the pace of innovation in our City.

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — The Los Angeles Fire Department will begin releasing verified response time data to the public once a month, Mayor Eric Garcetti and Fire Chief Ralph Terrazas said Thursday. The emergency response agency has been plagued by questions over the accuracy of its response time data since department officials admitted in 2012 the data they had been releasing showed firefighters were responding faster than they actually were. Officials at the time blamed the inaccurate data on a faulty process for crunching the times recorded in their dispatch system. The Los Angeles Fire Department website will begin publishing monthly updates on average citywide and response times that have been triple-checked internally by fire department officials and by two separate consultants.

Asian equities were mixed on the last trading day of the week as concerns over Ebola and China offset gains on Wall Street. A doctor in New York tested positive for the Ebola virus, the New York Times reported early on Friday, after returning from West Africa last week. Speaking at a press conference, New York Mayor de Blasio said officials believe “very few” people had contact with the doctor since his return. Markets reacted quickly to the news, with the Japanese yen strengthening 0.3 percent against the greenback and Dow futures dropping over 70 points. Meanwhile, attention in Asia was on China. Official data showed new home prices falling 1.3 percent on year in September, the first annual drop in nearly two years.
