A new extension for Google’s Chrome web browser adds even more functionality for the Google Drive cloud-based storage system. Google Drive is already a highly convenient option for not just storing data for your own ease of access but for collaborative projects as well. The cloud storage system allows you to share documents between users as well as edit them and collaborate with others, and all in real time. However, there are some limitations to Google Drive, namely that it doesn’t support very robust editing tools for every file extension out there – and there certainly are a lot of other programs that do a much better job.

The New Zealand government has committed to help citizens find and reuse open data more easily, according to its Open Government Partnership action plan. The country formally became a member of the international community of 64 countries with the publication of its action plan last week. The action plan for the next two years highlights strategies that will improve transparency, accountability, participation and innovation. From June 2015, it will implement a strategy to “help citizens identify, access and engage with government data and information” by promoting “awareness of available data, resources, tools and web sites”, the plan said. The government will also involve citizens in designing public services and improve services iteratively by monitoring citizen use, it says.

Today, only 1% of all things are connected in our world. In the next ten years, this number will increase dramatically — and with that — enabled societies to create smart cities. With the world moving more and more towards the Internet of Everything (IoE), it’s a space that’s only going to get more valuable. In fact, it’s estimated that right now, it’s worth about US$19-trillion. Africa meanwhile has a potential value space of US$500-million. That’s the equivalent of estimated revenue generated with South Africa’s World Cup four years ago. It’s understandable then that networking conglomerate Cisco is pretty excited about IoE. At the recent Cisco Connect 2014 South Africa, event it outlined how IoE could massively benefit Africa as it starts to build smart cities.

Devon County Council is partnering with service design agency Redfront on the node, one of 18 which have been created across the world. The node – billed as the first rural county version – is designed to support new projects and businesses to use open data, bringing together regional and international innovations. Simon Gough, director at Redfront, said: “We are delighted to be working with the ODI and our founding partners at Devon County Council. Creating the first rural county node will be an exciting challenge, and together we believe that there are huge opportunities to develop new projects, services and knowledge around some important issues.

With the rise of social media and search engines prompting growing concern over the ownership of personal data, co-operatives could help people control the information they share. On 20 October, Open Data Manchester organised a conference to explore the idea of an open data mutual. Open Data Manchester is a community of developers, activists, artists, journalists and public sector employees who want to become more familiar with the tools, datasets and projects using open data. Its conference in October looked at how open data co-ops could make a difference, as well as how a mutual organisation could represent the interests of its members. Alex Craven spoke to the conference about the project Our Data Mutual, which he helped to develop.

Devon is now home to an Open Data Institute (ODI) Node, which will work with councils, emergency services, community organisations, business and citizens across the county to improve innovation and boost transparency in every sector. The ODI Devon Node is designed to support new projects and businesses that use the power of Open Data, bringing together regional innovations with the best examples from around the world. ODI Devon’s initial focus will be on building new partnerships around key strengths such as environment and climate data, but the Node will also be looking to develop exciting new collaborations between rural and urban initiatives. ODI Devon is hosted by Service Design agency Redfront, in partnership with Devon County Council.

“The government is right to take some pride in what it has been able to achieve but [there is] much more to do,” said Nigel Shadbolt. “We’re doing very well in the UK, we’re ‘top of the pops’ when it comes to various reviews as to the amount of data and the quality of data we are putting out there [but] this is job not done,” he added, reflecting the message sent by Mike Bracken earlier in the day. When the District of Columbia first issued terms and conditions of use for its data, transparency advocates and civic hackers made their complaints known. Among the concerned parties was Josh Tauberer, founder of bill-tracking website GovTrack.us, who questioned if he would need a lawyer to hack in D.C. Tauberer highlighted vague and questionable terms, including one stating that website users would not encourage others to engaged in any conduct that would give rise to civil liability. Going forward, district officials want to use public feedback to proactively shape open government plans and improve current efforts.
