With the Victorian election just around the corner, the Australian Computer Society (ACS) has called on the major political parties to recognise the digital economy as the key driver of economic growth in the state. ACS Victoria chairman Michelle Beveridge says 550,000 Australians are employed in digital careers and the sector contributes more to GDP than mining. “Over many years the Victorian economy has been undergoing structural reform with a greater emphasis now needing to be placed on digital skills and knowledge,” she says. “Like our regional partners, we must recognise that the digital economy has become the key driver of the economy, and we need the Victorian government to support this vital growth area.

In news this week, debunking some mobile security myths, federal cloud contract deficiencies could compromise investments, and Silk Road 2.0 is taken down. Also, IBM assists in the Ebola fight with its Open Data Repository, and a new survey reveals the top IT initiatives for 2015. Fed Tech Magazine points out three myths about mobile security that can leave agencies at risk. The myths include the idea that mobile apps from trusted brands must be “safe,” that SMS cannot be compromised, and that smartphones don’t need anti-malware software. The article concludes, “Good security practices include policies, strong authentication, data encryption, user education and training, regular reinforcement and, ultimately, building a culture of information security and integrity.

Published today in the Open Access and Open Data Journal GigaScience, researchers from Universidad Politécnica de Madrid in Spain and the National Institutes of Health in the USA provide a fantastic example of open data sharing to help build these exact tools: a wealth of patient imaging data[1]. Even better: to enable reproducible comparisons between new tools, the researchers and journal have taken the unusual step of publishing and packaging the data alongside tools, scripts and the software required to run the experiments. This is available to download from GigaScience’s GigaDB database[2] as a “virtual hard disk” that will specifically allow researchers to directly run the experiments themselves and to add their own annotations to the data set.

VMware has its annual get-together in August in San Francisco, but a few weeks later the stories get extended and embellished at the European edition of VMworld in Barcelona. This year was no exception with a quiverful of slogans, and a barrage of announcements, all of which added up to an assertion that VMware would like to take charge of pretty much everything from the hardware in your data centers upwards. The big slogan “Brave New World of IT” brought an unintentional dystopian reference to Aldous Huxley’s book, but the dark side was hard to find in an event which promised  “No Limits”. Top European news was a data center in Germany for the vCloud Air hybrid cloud offering.
