In advance of the upcoming re-launch of OpenDataPhilly.org, Azavea invites designers, data scientists, developers to share data visualizations that utilize open data found on the portal. Philadelphia, PA, November 13, 2014 – As part of the Knight Foundation-funded upgrade to the data portal OpenDataPhilly.org, Azavea, a geospatial analysis (GIS) software development company, invites the public to participate in the OpenDataPhilly Visualization Contest by submitting their data visualizations that utilize data from one or more of the over 200 data resources found on the site.  Data visualizations can be static or interactive and may include maps, infographics, charts or any other creative display of data.

People can gauge the accuracy of their decisions, even if their decision making performance itself is no better than chance, according to a new study published in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science. In the study, people who showed chance-level decision making still reported greater confidence about decisions that turned out to be accurate and less confidence about decisions that turned out to be inaccurate. The findings suggest that the participants must have had some unconscious insight into their decision making, even though they failed to use the knowledge in making their original decision, a phenomenon the researchers call “blind insight.

Analysing page view data of Wikipedia articles can be used to effectively monitor and forecast disease outbreaks across the globe. Dr Sara Del Valle and her team from Los Alamos National Laboratory successfully monitored influenza outbreaks in the United States, Poland, Japan and Thailand, dengue fever in Brazil and Thailand, and tuberculosis in China and Thailand. The team was also able to forecast all but one of these outbreaks (tuberculosis in China) at least 28 days in advance. The results indicate people start searching for information on Wikipedia before they seek medical help. Sara Del Valle says a global disease-forecasting system will change the way we respond to epidemics.

I can still see the faces of my peers the minute after my college English professor said she loved to use Wikipedia. It’s a great place to start, she said. Knowing Wikipedia is an online encyclopedia where news anchors work “part-time as Death” and Spot the Dog “sips whiskey,” my peers and I were confused. But new research from PLoS Computational Biology suggests it was us, not our professor, who was wrong. Since its launch in 2001, Wikipedia has become the sixth most visited site in the world. Researchers reported the site contains around 30 million articles in 287 languages and it serves roughly 850 million article requests per day. More importantly, it’s a free, open source of data that is gaining traction as an “effective and timely disease surveillance.

Salesforce.com has unveiled Salesforce1 Lightning Connect, a new component for its Lightning Platform as a Service for mobile developers, which it introduced last month. Lightning Connect, which is available immediately, is an integration tool that moves data in real time from back-end legacy systems to the Salesforce.com mobile offering. In developing this tool, Salesforce.com collaborated with several integration vendors, including Informatica, Jitterbit, MuleSoft, Progress Software, SnapLogic and SoftwareAG, building a library of adaptors. The purpose for the offering is to make it easy for the user to move data into the new mobile product being crafted with Salesforce1 Lightning, Scott Holden VP of Salesforce1 Platform, told CRM Buyer.
